An armed mugger fled when he recognized the victim.

So said mayoral spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga, in giving this overnight crime round-up:

The mugger stopped a man at Valley and Ramsdell shortly after midnight Thursday. He moved to rob the man, then realized he knew him, and fled instead. The victim contacted the cops and provided information on the mugger. Police hadn’t yet tracked down the mugger by late Thursday morning.

At 12:21 a.m., an 18-year-old showed up at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He had a gunshot wound to his right foot. His version of what happened: He’d been walking near Bassett and Watson in Newhallville when he saw two men arguing and then heard gunshots, one of which hit him. He told cops he couldn’t identify the suspects.

Just a stylistic question to the writer. Unless you planned on adding alternate versions of what occured, what is the point of the phrase"his version of what happened".
