He would be saddened to see that the foot of oppression is still on the backs of the poor, the sick and the uneducated in our society. That the stain of racism and discrimination, although subtle, remains deeply woven into the fabric of society. He would be outraged that"the war on drugs" has led to an apartheid system of justice in this city as a result of selective enforcement of the law and racial and ethnic disparity within the court and prison system while there continues to be a deafening silence from our community's "leaders".He would be hurt that so many children have lost their parents to drugs and/or the prison industry. That Jim Crow is alive and well under the guise of a felony. That senseless violence has stolen the lives of so many innocent children, leaving behind so many grieving families. That those who have made economic/societal gains have distanced themselves from their less fortunate brothers and sisters. That children are attending million dollar schools without adequate tools for gaining a quality education, that hundreds of children are being expelled in kindergarten and our youth are criminalized for things that were part of our growing up,that so many babies are having babies, so many youth have lost hope , that certain areas of New Haven receive a great deal of the city's attention while other areas are ignored, that unemployment is so high among New Haven residents. That many politicians no longer serve the people yet they shamelessly remain in office .That money continues to be the root of all evil. I believe a great disappointment would be that Black parents have not demanded that our children know their history for without that knowledge they will never know their greatness That we have become a "me" and "I" society and no longer concerned about "we" and finally I believe that he would be deeply pained in knowing that we are no longer our brother's keeper and many of us have become our own worst enemy.I have a dream that we can build a better world for generations to come and I am committed to doing all that I can to make that reality.
