2214069491_055ccaa28c_m.jpg The hottest new downtown happening is a series called “Wine, Dine, Design,” featuring local architects, visits to funky spaces, and communal imagining of a city that could be. These photos from the inaugural event were taken by Judy Sirota Rosenthal. (WIlliam Kaempffer’s Register account of the event can be found here.)

More people should bike to work just like the Ambassador does in the top photo. I want to be as awesome as his hat.

there are rumors that college wine is now in the plans to create a simiar event. to put their own twist on things, they will be serving schlitz malt liquor, potted meat with spray on cheese, and guest will be enjoying collages of various cutouts from hustler, gallery and the new republic. the working title is brew, chew and screw. it's great becaues it will really parlay what downtown is all about.

There are further rumors that the architect Alan Organschi is partnering with the WPCA. He plans to build a slew of "green" houses for his mortgage banker clients out of "recycled" materials from the city's foreclosed homes. In all seriousness, green construction has some true merits, but it mostly functions as a marketing ploy to justify endless development. The movement, too, has created a cottage industry catering to wealthy housewives who can now express their high-minded commitment to sustainability by choosing eco-friendly materials for their weekend vacation homes.

I would like to see a Freakonomics-like study of nip sales. Giving drunks the option to purchase a nip rather than a full half pint might keep them merely glassy-eyed rather than riotously drunk. Perhaps College Wine has been doing the city a favor.
