ATM User Robbed

A man had just withdrawn cash from an ATM when he was robbed. Here’s what the victim told police, according to police spokesman Officer Joseph Avery:

The victim, driving away with a new wad of bills, stopped at the stop light at Quinnipiac and East Grand Avenues in Fair Haven Heights at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. As he sat at the light, two men approached the car. One man put a gun to his head and said he would “blow his head off” if he looked at him.

The victim turned over the cash. The two robbers fled over the river towards Fair Haven.

Oh brother. I live a block from there. Crime is up, people.

I, too live one block from the crime scene. As usual, The New Haven Independent is the only news source that provides important local news stories like this one. I would never hear about this from a WTNH broadcast, and I doubt the N.H. Register's editorial staff even knows where Fair Haven Heigths is. Thank you, NHI.

JackNH and any other Fair Haven Heights residents who have questions about this incident please e-mail me at AlexForWard13@yahoo.com or call me at 469-2141 and I'll share with you some details provided by Lt. Hoffman who is the East Shore District Manager. All I will note here is that for such a brazen incident at one of the busiest intersections in the city the only witness is the alleged victim. I will also be at the Mayor's Night Out this evening, 7pm at Fair Haven School and Lt. Hoffman will also be present.

It is completely possible this incident happened, because there is little foot traffic at that intersection b/c it is so dangerous to cross there (there is SOME foot traffic, but it is sporadic). It is a bus stop, but there are not often people waiting for the bus there. There is NEVER any police presence, unless they are stopped to get pizza at Ziggy's. That intersection is lethal, and it has been for years. I cross it several times a week going from my apartment to my mother's condo with my daughter, and it is dangerous. It makes me not want to walk anywhere in Fair Haven Heights, a beautiful, historic neighborhood. I hope that the plans for the Q Ave. redo will include improved safety features there. It is an awful feeling to hate walking outside your door everyday, and to be stressed about safety and traffic concerns on a regualr basis.

I had a long talk with Alex Rhodeen, my alderman, after I wrote my preious post. He had just come from Mayor's Night Out, and was anticipating a flood of calls.

He filled me in on some more details and facts about the story, the alleged victim's claims, and what the police know based on his report to them. While it is possible that the events went down like the ATM user said, I will say that I am feeling MUCH safer all of a sudden, since the story doesn't line up in the least, and there were no witnessess.

In the future, If the NHI could do a little bit more investigation before it uses headline that frighten women an children off the streets (and I literally ran from my car to my door, last night, with 3-yr-old in tears).

Please don't get all New Haven Register on us, using cheap headlines to create a story. It would be great to get a response from you all, and especially Melissa Bailey on this one. Did you even interview the "victim"? If you had, your story might read a bit differently.
