This morning's NYTimes online front page featured Castro's resignation and Musharraf's defeat. Both dictators. Both came to power in military coups. Both intolerant of dissent, judicial independence, and free elections. Both were at the center of nuclear proliferation crises. And they seem to share a tailor.

Musharraf received billions of US aid and almost unqualified support. He ruled for nine years.

Castro has been embargoed for 46 years, attacked personally and nationally by the CIA and US-backed forces. He ruled for 49 years.

It's possible we made some bad policy choices there, huh?
