With Love, From Austin

view-1.jpegIn exile from New Haven politics, Julio Gonzalez sends home a thank you.

Here’s the note that came with the photo of the former city alderman and top City Hall staffer:

Dear People of New Haven,

“Saludos!” from the Lone Star State. A few weeks ago you came out in huge numbers to the polls and in your wisdom gave Senator Barack Obama a significant margin that contributed to his Connecticut win and in no small part helped keep the Democratic presidential race alive.

So as a result of your efforts, the national campaign came to Texas. And what a gift it has been. I’’ve seen a former resident of the White House — who routinely wears the colors of the Holy Roman Empire — traverse the most humble parts of our border and plead for votes. And I’’ve seen the son of a black immigrant subtly suspend the edges of blackness, and whiteness, and immigrant-ness and all of that to talk to huge crowds about green jobs. In Texas! Between them Texans have heard about the unique things that we really need — like the DREAM Act and more VA Hospitals. They’’ve engaged in wonderful but often overlooked places like Brownsville and Lufkin. All of this and we still have a few weeks to go.

Last night I got to be a part of the excitement at the Democratic debate here in Austin. And I thought somebody should take the time thank you. So, thank you, New Haven. You took your vote seriously. And now our vote matters.
