Inspection Turns Up Expired IV Fluid

The city’s examining how it keeps tab on emergency medication in the wake of a state inspection of the fire department.

The inspection took place last week. It was a routine biannual visit from the State Department of Public Health (DPH).

New Haven passed the overall inspection although two problems were found, both of which were minor, according to DPH’s Len Guerica, who oversees the inspections.

Guerica said inspectors found expired IV fluids in the supply closet on an emergency vehicle. The contents of the equipment bags and gear that paramedics carry with them was “all in good working order,” and that’s more important, he said. The supply closet contains “extra quipment they have on their rig.” The department fixed the problem, Guerica said.

The other problem discovered: a high-beam headlight was broken on one emergency vehicle. The rest of the vehicle’s headlights worked; the department got right on fixing the high beam, according to Guerica.

“We are reviewing our policies for inspecting back-up materials,” said city Chief Administrative Officer Rob Smuts. “Inspections, like any dry run, are a good way of catching yourself and issues you need to address.”
