So what is planned for the actual holiday? Anything? Nothing like two weekends out of the month ruined by drunken pseudo-Italian-Americans pretending they're Irish. Calendars...bah, who needs 'em.

Great!!
Haven't missed one in at least 40 years.
Our group has about 35 to 40 revelers covering 4 generations.
Fortunately(?) I am the only one of "generation one" left who showed up, but other older Irish, or wannabees joined us at my daughter's Branford house for corned beef and cabbage, etc, after the parade.

I feel the same way Daniel.
As a kid I thought they were fun. As a teenager and into my early twenties I thought it was an excuse to drink in the middle of the day. Now it's just an annoyance. The last three times I went I was miserable. Between the drunks and the inability to walk anywhere without rubbing up against people I wanted to pull my hair out. The parade doesn't even make any sense. 90% of the groups marching have nothing to with the Irish or banishing pagans. That's another thing. All these other groups that go around recruiting people into religions, or assaulting them for not sharing the faith, why don't they get parades? Why not a parade to celebrate the Inquisition?
When this damn parade is going on. Or any parade downtown whether it's the Freddie Fixer mess or that miscellaneous Hispanic culture day that I still have scratches and dents in my hood from for mistakenly traveling through the downtown area on that day. I leave my house and head away from New Haven. I don't care where. Just away.
If you just want an excuse to get loaded than call it a "celebrate intoxication" parade or something because it doesn't have a damn thing to do with St. Patrick or the Irish. ...
Being Irish is not an excuse to be a drunk just like being Italian is not an excuse to demean women, being French is not an excuse to stink and being black is not an excuse to have illegitimate children at the age of 14.
There is no ethnic or racial excuse for bad behavior. Even if there were the first study to prove it would be shot down as racist by the very people claiming the correlation to be true.
I just don't get it.

I thought the parade was terrible. I know a lot of drunks attend the parade. That is expected. BUT, when drunks take over the parade and the parade route thats insane! I saw drunkards standing in the streets so much so , that the paraders had to move for them!? No cops wer ethere to push the crowds back. Drunkards spilled into the marching military andmocked them as they walked past. They also jumped in line when high school marching bands paraded by. Total disrespect and lawlessness.

Very cool fact...just looked it up on Wiki. Hmmm he was captured by the Irish. Geee you would think that my mom's parent's would of liked my father more knowing he was the same nationality as there Wonderful St. Patrick.
St. Patrick
"If I have any worth, it is to live my life for God so as to teach these peoples; even though some of them still look down on me."

Great parade, lots of fun etc. But... shouldn't there be more than seven porta-potties for 200,000 people? Especially at an event that is renowned for mass beverage consumption. It was ridiculous. People were lined up by the dozen peeing on churches and even the graves behind the center church. Aside from being a major nuisance to everyone from college drunks to parents with 3-year-olds, it is a public health hazard.
