Support Flows For Accused Officer

She helped a repeat offender find a steady job and cracked down on long-time drug dealers — so recounted Hill activists as they rallied behind police Lt. Holly Wasilewski.

Wasilewski is one of three city cops facing departmental charges in connection to a 2007 strip search. (Click here for Bill Kaempffer’s Register article outlining the case.)

Wasilewski has been the district manager of the Hill North policing area since early 2007. (Click here for a past Independent story following her in action one day.) At a press conference Thursday outside a corner store in the Hill, community leaders poured with stories praising the work she’s done in the past year. In their view, rather than being an insensitive cop, Wasilewski has brought true community policing to to their neighborhood.

blestpeters2.pngMaurice “Blest” Peters (pictured), a longtime Hill youth activist who now works with the city Street Outreach Worker Program, told of how Wasilewski helped one teen turn his life around.

“He was on the street, late at night, not knowing where he was going to lay his head at,” said Peters. The young man, 21, had been “in the system,” bouncing around from home to home, since age two. A high-school drop-out, he’d been in and out of jail for drug charges.

“He was on the path to getting something serious.” And he’d overstayed his welcome at the last place he had crashed.

Wasilewski “could have let him hang himself” and get arrested again, Peters said, but she tried a more human, supportive approach.

Picture%20733.jpgWasilewski (pictured) teamed up with Peters to make sure he stayed on top of probation. She bought him a winter coat. She helped him find an apartment. She made the first contact to get him a job on the construction site of the Three Sisters.

When the young man slipped up and gave up on the job, she helped him refocus and find another one — in the kitchen at a neighborhood seafood restaurant. Today, he’s holding the job down and living in his own apartment, Peters said.

The outreach worker said the incident was just one of many where Wasilewski has gone “above and beyond.” When a family with a lot of kids was struggling for food, “she put $60 in my hand” to make sure they got through the weekend, he said.

“You’re standing outside a store where residents complained for years about drug activity,” said Hill Alderwoman Jackie James, standing at the corner of Stevens Street and Davenport Avenue. The drug-dealing continued until Wasilewski came along and helped bust the place, said James.

James said the lieutenant has been quick to respond, acting within two days to help shut down a drug house that had been a problem for months. (Click on the play arrow at the top of this story to watch her statement.)

Thursday’s press conference was organized by Eli Greer, head of the Edgewood Park Defense Patrol and prominent critic of the chief of police. The event drew support from the area management team’s chair, Lena Largie, as well as from Tracey Suggs, mother of Justus.

Those gathered pledged to support Wasilewski if her matter goes before the Board of Police Commissioners. A scheduled hearing before that board was postponed. A new date has not yet been set, according to city spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga.

Bravo I was wondering why the story was not posted sooner. It is about time someone stood up for these officers! This is what my complaint is about! The system not letting cops do there jobs. I do not advocate bad cops....but this is a perfect example of the system working against the police being able to do there jobs.
Was this bending the law??? NO! Are these officers bad? NO! Dang it they are trying to get the bad guys off the street!! And the laws are working against them from doing so!

I stand beside you LT. Holly!

Perfect example of the police doing whatever they deem neccasary to enforce the laws. I am not saying Lt Holly did anything wrong but if she broke procedures by giving this man an illegal cavity search then she should deal with the consequences. Past good deeds do not rectify an ilegal act. If a citizen was an volunteer and help to the community for years would that void out there future minor crimes. Police should pay the same debt to society for illegal acts as everyone else. With all this said I support the innocent until they are proven guilty just like all Americans should.

Rules are rules and if the line was crossed then justice needs to be served. If Lt Holly did in fact "bend " the law then she needs to face the board and be dealt with harshly. I'm sure being a police officer can be difficult at times but thats the career choice they make and then swear to uphold law and order. They swear to uphold law and order, not change it when they feel its ok to do so.

Posted by: Common Sense | March 14, 2008 5:09 PM

Why doesn't every parent require their children who grow up to be adults swear to "Uphold law and order". It seems that many (not all) that have past arrest records continue to make matters worse for themselves. Too many good Police Officers are being second guessed everytime they take steps to ensure our safety. Law and order begins on the homefront. The majority of young people have learned the "Law and Order" message from their parents and create no issues on the street.

A better question is why is that no matter how much corruption and wrong doing is exposed witin NHPD that we are expected to blindly be supportive of them? The law is defined by those who write the law.Criminals are defined by those who make that determination. Many of the writers of the law and its enforcers don't respect the law themselves and think they have an immunity to it. They can break the law with impunity and yet commit acts of kindness and it's all others recall and yet a young kid breaks the law and gets a felony and he's forever a felon and if he spends some time in prison he's forever an ex con.He can never overcome his mistakes no matter how many good things he does. Why is that? Just months ago people in high places lauded the governor of New York and all his good work and all the while he had a hidden criminal side. If Holly did good things and you have a good relationship with her. Great! Support her, but don't lose your credibility in the community by blindly supporting anything without the facts. She and others are not being brought before the commission without supportive evidence. My quest is not to demonize these officers. This is about justice and putting an end to an illegal, dehumanizing and despicable practice. The officers know what they have done and hopefully they will have the decency to admit their wrong and change their behavior.NOONE is above the law and the sooner that is apparent the better we all will be as a society. When the adults are law abiding the children will likely follow.

Bravo!! The boy that cried wolf comes to mind when I hear this stuff....A man gets arrested for drug once, twice and then the third time he does not have drugs but he is mad because the cops think he does? COME ON...and the cop is wrong??? No if we (new haveners) want our cops to start getting our streets cleaned up we need to start backing them on things like this! Because as long as we allow the criminals to use the law to get away with crime and make it so the cops are afaird to arrest the bad guy things are only going to get worse not better!

Posted by: Edward_H | March 15, 2008 10:53 AM

Let's see, I don't know about the other cops involved but we have on one hand a police Lt. with an outstanding record in the community and broad base support from various citizens from all types of backgrounds and a proven track record of exemplary community policing against a felon drug dealer/addict who injured city officers? Lt. Wasilewski seems to have done more good for this city in one month than Dramese Fair has done in his entire life. This stinks to high heaven. The only reason we are hearing about this is because [he] is related to Barbara Fair. My God, Have any of the males in her family been able to avoid getting arrested? What proof do we have other than a felon's word that a strip search was conducted? No wonder cops in NH don't bother to enforce the laws. Seems the brass is ready to cover their collective a***s and throw a good officer under the bus. It seems to me the NH cops are better off just cashing your checks and staying under the radar until you are ready to retire.

I usually agree with you but I would stop short of calling him a man. He may be male but he is not a man. Real men dont sell poison to their own communities and real men certainly don't go around hiding crack in their crack.

I was floored when I heard the alligations made form a repeat convicted felon held more water the word of three officers, and all two are highly decorated.

It baffles the mind how some are quick to make judgement and vilify these fine officers by going to the press and demanding that action should be taken against them, and sending them to the police board to face possible demotions, suspensions, or worse, without considering the source. Let's not forget that Judas Chief Ortiz, and how he threw these officers under a bus for political purposes, his actions are typical for an incompetent Chief.

The only silver lining in this whole disgraceful event was that the cop's can see that the general public is behind them and support them. They can also see that these police bashers are exsposed as self serving media hounds, with egg on there faces.

One last question, is the Sargeant involved (Reyes) the same one from the paper last week that grabbed the kid with a gun who shot another youth on Elm St.?, if so where his big article Paul?

Common sense
I wonder what Lt. billy whites parents told him about up hold law and order, How About the ex governor of new york eliot spitzer what did his parents tell him about up holding law and order or did there give him a subscription to penhouse and playboy or even good old John Rowland what did his parents tell him about up hold law and order. To Cedarhillresident it is funny how you say that we must back up the police on these criminals,But when it comes to ICE who jobs it is to go after the illegal immgrants who are breaking
immgrantion laws which is a crime you said no to ICE!!! Seems to me you have a bias when it comes to inforcement of the law!!

Cedarhill and Edward H, Maybe getting the facts right and broadening those narrow lens might help you to see the world from other's perspectives and experiences. Edward H, (who seems to be caught up on my sons and family members) one thing I can bet on and that is Dramese is more man than you will be. Just keep hiding behind a pseudonym to speak your narrow mind.It seems to empower you best. Keep commenting about something you know so little about and MAYBE your feelings of superiority and self righteousness will keep you warm at night.Obviously something's not keeping you occupied because you seem to be so stuck on my sons and nephews. Look around you millions of Black men have been incarcerated. My sons's experiences are not breaking news.

bfair...I do stand by this officer and all like her. Even the one that did wrong to my family. I am sick of people Villainizing our officers.

I am tired of the Media hounds, people trying to justify criminal behavior. People looking to sue cops for looking at you the wrong way. People who BEND the law to commit crimes against community's and the people that have to live with them everyday!! My community, your community are pleaged with dealers and gun totten youth!! You scream were are the cops....well they are there but they are walking on egg shells because people out there are standing in there way with petty bull crap like this...... OHHHH I AM GETTING ATTACKED FOR THIS COMMENT.....go ahead start posting the hate.

Ed.....love it :)
And a good point in the process. Are these males the role models our young men have to look up to!!! MY G*D. It is just reinforcing, excuses and blaming society, blaming the police, this man has no one to blame but himself. And these officers were protecting the people of that community from criminals!
13 states now have new laws to help protect people from drug dealers "drug dealer liability law" it is not much of a law but it is a start! It is a turning point for community's to say enough! We want you out of our city's and community's!

First "my little fraction" I back up good cops trying to make our city safe. But the laws for some reason have changed so much to protect the innocent that they (the laws) no make it hard for the cops to do there jobs. ICE is basically in the similar boat (not the same but similar). Immigration laws are in place and have been but where not enforced...so much so that 14 million people managed to come into the country. All of a sudden we want to enforce those laws?? That does not make sense to me. The immigration law seems to be a law of convince. When we needed the low wage workers we turned a blinds eye on that law to allow them to come here...but now that America in in a bad place and we need those jobs we want to enforce it. NO that is wrong. What i think of when I think of these peoples children that only know America as there home!

PS
Jackie I had you down as one of my favorite Aldermen. And time and time again you prove that judgment to be right. Thank you

CedarhillResident
I also back good police officer the ones who are like frank serpico who help turn in the crooked ones!!!Look at how retired police detective clarence willoughby is using the fifth amendment
in my opinion who is trying to hide his crooked ways!!How come the illegal immgrants do not get on line like other immgrants who are using the immgrantion law that is in place, my in laws who are on the list and are here on work visa,So this is B.S. They are breaking the law all they have to do is get on the list like every body who are comming into this coutry legal. All laws are of convince and is base on class. As i said look at clarence willougby and how he is using the law.And you want to give police more power you better read about cointel pro in which the good old police and Fbi lied and try to set up people like Dr.king, Also look how Nixon try to set up John lennon and get him deport for is antiwar activism. Bottom line is that anybody non-crooks
crooks and crooked cops have a right to file a complaint. P.S Rember the New Haven police corruption probe is not over yet and from what i hear from the police i know you are going to be very surpise when the next list of these crooked cops come out!!!

I still don't understand why alcohol isn't considered a "drug"? I would rather see hundreds of people taking Ecstasy and smoking pot, on a weekend night, downtown, than the hundreds of nasty, violent meatheads and skanks that stagger around drunk on Crown St. after the bars close. What is the connection between East Haven, hair gel, steroids and alcohol that is so unappealing?

BJFAIR

Maybe getting the facts right

What facts did I get wrong in my previous post? Are you misconstruing
the following statement? "The only reason we are hearing about this is
because [he] is related to Barbara Fair.". Unfortunately I cannot edit
my comment and add "in my opinion" to make it easier for you to
understand this is my opinion. I assumed that most people would
understand this since I am the one writing it.

one thing I can bet on and that is Dramese is more man than you will
be.

A cute statement but utterly meaningless, obviously we share different
definitions of manhood. Your definition of a man appears to include
someone who is a repeat felon, takes/sells drugs, trespasses and possibly hides crack between his butt cheeks, mine does not. We clearly share a difference of opinion in this matter. However, if you are able to produce a definition of manhood we can both agree on I will take your wager.

Just keep hiding behind a pseudonym to speak your narrow mind.

Duh! Edward is my name. Not a pseudonym. I have actually had my name and picture in the NHI but I am not an attention seeker wrapping themselves in a cloak of social justice or any other cause.

Keep commenting about something you know so little about

You are correct. I know nothing of hiding crack in my crack. Nor did I
even know the NHPD needed to get a search warrant to check someone's
crack for crack. I had no idea of the joy cops get from conducting crack searches for crack on young black men. My God, if I ever get pulled over for a traffic violation in New Haven not only do I have to worry about a ticket , I have to worry about my crack as well!. Do all cops delight in spreading apart someones butt cheeks? Maybe it is just a NHPD thing? I wonder if cops sit around the locker room trading stories of crack searches.

MAYBE your feelings of superiority and self righteousness will keep you warm at night

Actually I use an oil based furnace or a wood stove but thanks for your concern. I would love for you to explain how I can use my feelings of superiority and self righteousness to keep me warm at night. Have you seen the price of oil!

Obviously something's not keeping you occupied because you seem to be so stuck on my sons and nephews.

Right on! Between running my own business, holding a full time management position at an international bank and taking care of my family I need something to occupy my time. Good thing for me every few months we either:
A) Hear you whine about how hard things are for your felon sons
B) Crying about the parole ban
C) Moan about people who have to travel far to see their incarcerated
criminal acquaintances

Or any other number of so called problems that have a simple solution.
Stop committing crimes. Keep it up though. You work entertains me to no end.

Look around you millions of Black men have been incarcerated.

Look around you, far more millions of Black Men and women are victimized everyday. Anytime a mugger is caught you can bet there are more muggings he has committed gone unaccounted for.

My son's experiences are not breaking news.

When you are right, you are right. And their experiences never will be breaking news as long as we have people who enable young black men to continue their criminal activity.

To paraphrase a great American songstress:

Hiding crack in your crack is whack!

Ed you "cracked" me up. Really I had tears. Very well done!

But I do not want to down play the work that Barbara does. Your cause is an important one. But Bfair, I am looking from the outside in on this situation right now. And unlike Ed, yes I do know. And as an outsider it appears to me that your name is being used as a free pass. Your reputation is being used as evidence that these cops are in the wrong. Now again that is just what I see from the outside. I could be wrong.

Sometimes in life we fight for what is right but lose what made us start the battle.
There comes a time when familys think they are trying to help there loved ones...as so many of us do. When all we are doing is prolonging the bad.
An addiction to the drama. An addiction to being needed. An addiction to fixing everything. A co-dependency. Tough Love really does work..not just for drugs and alcohol but for any bad behavior.

ok this post was way out of line....and probably totally wrong. but I am going to hit the post button anyway. go easy on me for it...it was out of love
