The city honored the Career High Panthers Wednesday for winning the Class LL state championship this year.

Superintendent Reggie Mayo recalled how the Panthers were down by eight points in a game against New Britain on March 8. They came from behind and won the game — and the title.

He said that it was a life lesson that applies not just to sports, but academic exams and any other challenge.

“it’s not important to fall down. It’s important what you do when you get up,” he said. “You got up and won this game.”

While the team’s captains cut into the basketball court-shaped cake prepared by Carriage House Catering, Panthers Coach Kevin Walton got to work on next year’s title.

He gave some tips to freshman Bria Moore. Moore, a forward, didn’t start this year but plans to spend three more years on the team.

“She has to learn how to play on the perimeter,” Walton said. He particularly wants her to work on her three-point shot and her 15-foot jumper from the foul line.

“She’s definitely the future,” he said. “She’s definitely the cornerstone of our program over the next three years.”
