Candy-Seeker Erupts
by Melissa Bailey | April 29, 2008 11:10 AM | Permalink | Comments (1)
A man walked into the Rite Aid pharmacy at 60 Whalley Ave. at 8:43 p.m. Monday, according to police. He tried to buy a box of Mike & Ike’s fruity candy with some pennies. The clerk told him she couldn’t take pennies. The crestfallen candy-seeker stepped aside. As the next customer paid, the man reached into the cash register and began taking cash.
As he ran out the door, employees tried to block him. He wrestled with them and threatened to reach into his pocket and pull out a knife. He escaped, fleeing east on Whalley on foot.
The suspect was described as a black male in his 40s, six feet tall, dark complexion, medium build, with short hair with a gray spot on top. He was wearing a blue raincoat over a blue hoody, blue jeans, and black shoes.
Also according to police:
Cedar Hill Visitor Assaulted
And a man told police he was assaulted after his car broke down in Cedar Hill. Here’s what the victim told police: At 8:45 p.m. Monday, the victim, a New Havener, got a flat tire on State Street near Rock Street. He pulled over. He saw a green Honda Civic with tinted windows. Just then, someone grabbed him from behind and the driver of the Honda Civic “jumped out and ran across the street and punched him in the face.”
The man spoke Spanish to a blond woman, who rifled through his pockets. Stolen was $260 and a black Samsung cell phone. The perps sped away in the Honda south on State Street.
Hit Again
The Visels Pharmacy at 714 Dixwell Ave. was burglarized for the second time in two weeks. Someone broke in through the front window on Tuesday at 3:02 a.m. and stole “numerous packets of cigarettes.”
And the statewide narcotics task force made a drug bust at 164 Rosette St. in the Hill. Seized was approximately .4 grams of crack cocaine. One man was arrested.
