2 Joints Seized

The Statewide Narcotics Task Force swept into Fair Haven — and arrested a woman for having two marijuana cigarettes.

Total yield: .3 grams.

Here’s the release from the police:

“On 05/29/2008 an ongoing investigation conducted by SNTF-New Haven Initiative concerning drug dealing within the city of New Haven led to the execution of a search warrant at 73 Woolsey Street, 1st Floor, New Haven. Seized from the residence were two marijuana cigarettes weighing approximately .3 grams…

A 33 year-old woman there was “was arrested for Possession of Marijuana. This investigation will help improve the quality of life in this New Haven neighborhood.”

Awesome. OK, I won't even get into the whole "is it really worthwhile investigating and arresting someone for two joints" argument. We saw where that went last time. So lest take another tact.

A) How much did it cost the taxpayers to seize two joints and charge this woman?

B) What cases were not pursued or opportunities missed in order to break this case?

C) Why are we not hearing about kilos of crack or heroin, or even pounds of marijuana being seized? Is this a completely incompetent task force straight out of Cheech and Chong? Is Sgt. Tedesco in charge? Or is NHI just not reporting on the big drug busts?

Say what you want about marijuana. It's dangerous, it's not dangerous, it's totally great in brownies, whatever. What about the cost of these operations and the paltry amounts routinely recovered?

And to those who will no doubt once again argue that the cops have no way of knowing how much will be in the house when they come through the door, WELL THEY SHOULD. If that is the case then they are not doing their jobs. If, indeed, there are large quantities of drugs moving through this house, there certainly won't be anymore. If they ever were there, they'll be finding a new stash house.

Note to the Keystones who pulled this caper off; wait until the birthday boy walks into the room before yelling "Surprise!"

Two maryjanes? That's it! She probably found them on the street and was going to throw them away. How much did this bust cost the state? Inquiring Minds want to know.

I'm glad Fairhaven is safer now.

That's excellent news! I don't know if the NHPD is clean or efficient yet, but at least we know they have a sense of humor.

Is this a joke?

Posted by: James | May 30, 2008 7:16 PM

No, GHG, it's not a joke in the sense that no humor is intended. Just wait until the law and order crowd shows up to defend this as a significant victory in the war on drugs.

Obviously, the Dealer target of the warrant had cleared out or run dry, leaving the girl "holding" just what was in her "bag".

I've been reporting for years that the logical conclusion to 2,3,6 cars a night parking and smoking alongside the park near my house is that they are buying nearby... perhaps in some sketchy apartments. I'd sure like some agency to get good intelligence and find the root of this nuisance.

But this joke of a raid improved no quality of life whatsoever. Not unless it helps NHPDSNTF be less keystone next time.

Folks, this is your tax dollars at work! Of course, the root of all problems in this City is marijuana. Haven't you seen the movie, "Reefer Madness?" It's an honest account of the evils of this dangerous drug.

Forget the shootings, sexual assaults, street robberies, and burglaries. We MUST focus on eradicating cannabis. Just think how much safer the Woolsey Street neighborhood is now that there are two less marijuana cigarettes to be smoked. My goodness! But for the police intervention, that woman might have eaten all the chocolate chip cookies in Fair Haven.

not that i needed more fuel added to my "feeling angry, impotent and really mad at the way our government operates fire", i do appreciate this article having been written and run. at least some of us are on the same page.

O.k., i'll help out the mighty n.h.p.d., come to my house at 950 elm street, i've got probably three, four times that - you can save the city all of the overtime and gas money.
where can i send money to help pay the legal bills and bail of this woman? what petitions can i sign? where should we bad, immoral, destructive citizens who smoke some weed at home or when we're really bad - gasp - in a state or city park on a sunny day - turn ourselves in?
Listen, as a peace loving, tax paying, job holding voting new havener i detest this kind of monkey business. i'm not one of these "legalize hemp because it's good for the environment" im a "decriminalize weed because i like to smoke it" people. most of us new haven people can at least agree its a wast of time to chase pot smokers, let alone three joints worth.
the nhpd shoule be ashamed of itself.
let me know when we organize a smoke in at city hall, i'll be there. of course i may be late 'cause i'll be stoned, but i'll be there.
by the way, does the n.h.p.d. have figures on how many 'pot crazed stoners" have robbed c-stores or stabbed and raped old ladies in east rock?

Idiots, god damned idiots.

I think that what we may be seeing is Operation Hardhat in effect.

She'll probably get a life sentence.

OH, I forgot, cedarhillresident, what do they sell at 12 ROCK St?

Posted by: cedarhillresident [TypeKey Profile Page] | June 1, 2008 11:50 AM

fairhavener I never asked what they sell and they are a low level seller slash stash house. but the crack whore that was pacing my street waiting for them one day was not what I wanted to see out my front door. I am not anti pot. And I agree that it should be regulated and sold like booze. But it is illegal right now. Even if they are selling pot their clients come back to my street to hook and use because they think it is ok because they buy on it here. not to mention their friends and acquaintances thinking the street is a safe place to do drug sales. I will agree in the past few weeks the selling on my street has slowed down since I have made it more public of the activity...which I am sure someone gave them a heads up on....which I owe that person a thank you for. But it does not lessen the fact that grace st and cedar hill ave have a larger problem. Not to mention the minors that are involved on those streets. Or the fact that my street may have slowed down but give it time it will pick back up when they get tired of having to get in the car and meet people.

OK, Drug Task Force. If you must bust distribution of pot, this is what a pot bust looks like. Try to take notes. Quantities measured in the tonnes, not fractions of grams.

Sorry cedarhillresident but you missed my joke. The correct answer is they are selling crack on Rock St.
