James: Never Mind

IMG_0103.jpgLess than a week after announcing she’s taking on State Rep. Toni Walker, Jackie James has changed her mind.

James, a Hill alderwoman, had announced her intention to take out petitions to mount a challenge candidacy, at last Wednesday’s state legislative convention at Celentano School.

The announcement surprised people, because Walker, the incumbent in the 93rd General Assembly District, had been James’ mentor.

At the time, James was reacting to a dispute with Democratic Town Committee Chair Susie Voigt (at right in photo with James) over the selection of party co-chairs in James’ ward.

More broadly, James said that although she didn’t have disagreements with Rep. Walker on state legislative issues, she believes that New Haven’s state legislators need to start challenging party and City Hall leaders on New Haven city government issues.

“I’m not going to run” after all, James said in a conversation Tuesday. “Toni and I were able to work out what some of the issues are. We talked. I think there needs to be a change in leadership, not necessarily with Toni. They need to play a bigger role about what goes on in the city and stop using the excuse” of that not fitting their state job description.”

Also, James said, “I don’t have enough time.”

Toni Walker said Tuesday afternoon that she had a meeting planned with James. “Out of respect” to James she wanted to withhold comment until after the meeting, she said.

The challenge to Walker by James may not have been the best approach to getting her point across, but I totally agree with James when she says the following:

"New Haven's state legislators need to start challenging party and City Hall leaders on New Haven city government issues".

And

"They need to play a bigger role about what goes on in the city and stop using the excuse" of that not fitting their state job description."

Precisely, State legislatures fight successfully at the state level attracting state monies to New Haven, but that is where their involvement ends.
The legislators then sit back and watch the way and manner in which the mayor allocates the states funds, at times to the determent of most citizen's primary needs.
All one need do is look at the budget and it's priorities. The cronies, who number more than the needed majority votes(16) to pass all ordinances. These cronies and would be cronies, trip all over each other to please city hall.

At the same time state legislators sit back, disagree with the proposed spending, but maintain, "That's not my job".

This posture is no longer acceptable Toni Walker (et al).
and all.
