So… McCain = Bush?

That was the right answer in a game show on a downtown sidewalk Wednesday. But it took more than that to win a Dum-Dum pop.

The quiz show was staged at noon by volunteers from New Haven’s chapter of the national netroots organization Moveon.org. Similar “Bush-McCain Challenges” took place in cities across the country.

The volunteers quizzed passers-by on whether they “know the difference between the [President George] Bush position and the [GOP presidential candidate John] McCain position” on Iraq, health care, abortion, social security, among other issues.

At stake: prizes including Dum-Dum lollipops, Jolly Ranchers (get it?), and Blue’s Clues bobbleheads.

Not to mention the fate of the Free World.

The ultimate answer to the quiz— that Democratic partisans seek to portray the Republican frontrunner as a clone of an unpopular lame-duck incumbent — was clear before the it began.

But the specific questions posed by MoveOn’s Bill McGlone proved trickier, as the first round’s two contestants — from the New Haven Independent and the New Haven Register (reporter Maria Garriga) — found out.

The Register won the round, of course. Click on the play arrow above to play along and see how you score. Click here for more info on the national event.
