Guv To Teens: You Can Work

00cs062.jpgEven if you’re 15, you can start ringing up orders, thanks to a bill signed into law this week.

The bill was little noticed amid more controversial measures during the recent legislative session. But it will make a big difference for teens seeking employment this summer.

The law allows 15-year-olds to work as cashiers, baggers and stockers in retail stores. Gov. M. Jodi Rell signed it June 2.

Fifteen-year-olds used to be able to hold those jobs under a former law. But the law required that the state legislature renew it. The legislature never got around to it last year, so the law expired — and 15-year-olds were out of luck.

Then this spring they voted to renew it, retroactively. The law took effect immediately upon Rell’s signing it this week.

Now students need to get working papers through their high schools in order to take the jobs, according to Department of Labor legislative liaison John McCarthy.

“Gov. Rell believes that enabling 15-year olds to have part-time jobs will allow thousands of young people to gain responsibility and develop a strong work ethic during their summer vacations,” said gubernatorial spokesman Adam Liegeot. “This law lets Connecticut teens get work experience that will help them to prepare for higher education and for future careers. The law also benefits state businesses that are looking for summer help.”

The new version of the law no longer contains a sunset provision. That means it’s permanent; lawmakers no longer have to reauthorize it in the future.

The Department of Labor’s website has an extensive checklist of rules governing jobs held by minors. Access it here.

this is great news, especially for teens in New Haven who need more reasons not to hang out on the street corners this summer! I had a job in high school when I lived in Simsbury, and I remember having to get working papers from my guidance counselor.

A summer job teaches responsibility, cash-handling skills (very important in life!), and really gives a sense of accomplishment when the checks roll in! Teens these days have cell phones and expensive habits; parents will appreciate teens having jobs to help pay for these items, for sure!

I had an allowance when I was younger ($40/month) and that helped teach me about money, but until I had to "slave" for it, I never really did appreciate all the hard work that went into its value!

Giving teens a way to make money and learn about taxes and government earlier in life is important, and I'm glad Rell re-signed this law...and made it permanent!
