Teen Hit By Stray Bullet

A 13-year-old boy was shot in the leg by a stray bullet in Newhallville Saturday night, police said.

The boy, who just celebrated his 13th birthday last week, was riding his bicycle mid-block on Ivy Street at 11:06 p.m. Saturday when he got shot, according to police spokesman Joe Avery. The boy took a bullet in the upper thigh and was treated for a non-life threatening wound.

Police believe the boy was caught in the middle of a shootout from two ends of that block of Ivy Street, according to Avery.

“He was not the intended target,” Avery said. Cops found shell casings at two ends of the block, at Newhall and Ivy and Winchester and Ivy.

In other crime news, according to Avery:

A Chinese food deliveryman from the Wachun restaurant at 218 Grand Ave. was robbed at gunpoint while making a delivery to 62 Wolcott St. at 12:35 a.m. Sunday.

Two male roommates at 186 Saltonstall Ave. in Fair Haven got into a fight around 1 a.m. Sunday. One stabbed the other in the chest with a kitchen knife. The victim, 21, suffered from internal injuries from the assault. His roommate, 25, was charged with first-degree assault.

And someone smashed the front door of C-Town at the Dixwell Plaza at 4 a.m. Monday. Police found the security screen had been cut and the glass had been broken. The thief or thieves apparently stole cigarettes.

Why is a 13 year old riding his bike around at 11:06 pm?

Who was the intended target in this shooting; and where is the outrage from this neighborhood's alderpeople and activists?

We cannot be so hardened that violence in this neighborhood is treated as routine. It should be immediately denounced and there should be a public call to identify the perpetrators.

Yale and state police should be called in to help track down these hoodlums.

Didn't an alderman in this neighborhood go nuts when a stray bullet hit his house last year. Whats his reaction to this?

This apparent lack of engagement by local leadership on this shooting in this neighborhood is alarming.

Maybe these leaders could take a page out of the playbook of Westville, Edgewood and Eastrock alderpeople.

I can tell you where the alderman/woman was or is? championing another useless cause that does no good for the city ie attacking the cops, saving a bird sanctuary, whining about yale students who dont know how to cross the street, or kissing some wealthy/powrful A$$.
Should a 13 yo be out at 11pm, no, but lets not blame the victim. it is time the city takes back the streets. not with two bit preachers and mayoral lackies but with strength and numbers.
to the victims of the violence. if you havent yet, start talking to the police and stop being scared. lets be honest when was the last time a victim or witness was injured for standing up against violence.
lastly, as an immigrant to new Haven (from another state not a country though) what the F is an alderman good for

This should and will be a key issue on who should be elected to city and state office in '08 and '09.
