City Workers Fill Blango’s Coffers

IMG_0221.jpgAt least 38 fellow city payrollees ponied up money to help Charles Blango get elected to the state House of Representatives.

Blango (pictured at a campaign event) is one of two candidates competing in an Aug. 12 primary to replace 94th District State Rep. Bill Dyson, an independent-minded City Hall critic retiring after 32 years in office.

Blango, who won the party machine’s endorsement at a nominating convention, faces a challenge by activist Gary Holder-Winfield.

Both candidates filed campaign finance reports Friday with the State Elections Enforcement Commission.

A Newhallville alderman and an employee of the Board of Education, Blango is the favorite of political insiders and others dependent on City Hall for their livelihoods. His most recent campaign finance statement reflects that fact: At least 38 city government employees, lobbyists or contractors contributed to Blango’s $5,210.15 total contributions as of June 23. they included top mayoral appointees such as Development Administrator Kelly Murphy, Chief Administrative Officer Rob Smuts, housing authority Chief Karen DuBois-Walton and, presumably, deputy economic development chief Christine Bonanno (listed in the report as “Chastine Buranno”).

Of the 38, at least 22, like Blango, receive their paychecks from the Board of Education. Several contributors work alongside Blango in the school system’s truancy office.

Click here to read Blango’s report and see how many government-dependent contributors you can identify.

Willie Greene — a third candidate, who said he plans to file petitions with the state Tuesday to qualify to run for the 94th District Seat in November as an independent — blasted Blango’s city-connected contributions.

“It clearly tells me that you’ve got the Board of Education and the city administration running Charlie as they have in the past,” Greene said.

Blango begged to differ. He noted that over 230 people gave him money. All but “seven or eight” live in the district, he said.

“My basic money did not come from the Board of Ed,” he said. “My money came from voters, resident voters.”

Many contributors gave in the $10 range. Candidates need to raise 150 contributions from the district of at least $5, and a total of $5,000, to qualify for $25,000 in public financing.

If Blango’s contributions are certified to count toward that goal, that means he’ll receive public financing.

n17225825762_1477339_3266.jpgSo will Holder-Winfield, if his reported contributions list pans out. His campaign reported raising $5,640 from around 200 people. About 180 live in the district, according to Holder-Winfield (pictured at a campaign pre-canvas cook-out Sunday).

Many of the contributors gave the $5 minimum. The list included professors from area campuses like Southern Connecticut State University and Gateway; incumbent Dyson; Alderwoman Alfreda Edwards; local peace activists; Gateway President Dorsey Kendrick; Jason Turner, senior pastor of Community Baptist Church; and gadfly Gary Doyens.

You can ad me and my family. I got their real late on Friday. Gary has been an amazing advocate in many causes that effect the residents of this city. He is the candidate that has the Hartford experience that we need. Good Luck Gary I know Cedar Hill is their for you!!

Posted by: dixwell livin | July 22, 2008 9:26 AM

and what experience would that be? showin up at a rally he dont know nothing about? only issue he cares about is gay marriage

i will miss mr. dyson. i knew mr, dyson. trust me when i say gary aint no mr. dyson.

DIXWELL LIVIN-Ignorance is the name of the beverage that is consumed by you daily. As a matter of fact you had to be drunk when you wrote your comment. I love the picture that Paul used for the beginning this article: BLANGO standing in front of the new splash pad...many of the people enjoying the recreational area have never seen their alderman in his entire 8 year run, except a casual parade wave as he races to his homestead. I don't believe Winfield is Dyson; However, Winfield's ability to articulate the needs of the communities that he will serve will enable us to begin to have real dialog about issues that are crippling this city. BLANGO has never been independent in his thinking about any part of city government. If you want to explore comparisons; the following equation is the perfect fit:
BLANGO + DESTEFANO = NO MONEY FROM JODI RELL, which unfortunately means...

MORE MONEY FROM US/THE TAXPAYERS!

In closing, we need to elect a state representative based on legislative experience, advocacy, accessibility, clear understanding of local/state government. It has nothing to do with the number of years on the BOA; when your just a warm body with a two word vocabulary: YES-JOHNNY! BLANGO, WARD 20 is filled with residents that want a safe place to live.
You haven't served your ward well. No one should promote you to the next level of goverment! SHAME ON YOU, Minister Blango...Let your people go...Straight to the polls and teach you a lesson!

Dixwell Livin:

You obviously do NOT know "Mr. Dyson", because if you did you would trust HIS judgement to support a candidate who HE believes will be the best qualified, an independent thinker, and a leader for our community.

Blango
you should try running without the mayor and his cronies from city hall to the board of ed.and that includes Susan Voight the Democratic Chair for the city......when they want there yes person elected they do it with venom....Charlie you are one of those yes people....so my little contribution and support will go to Holder-Winfield sorry Charlie...

Dixwell Livin:
You have a right to your opinion - not your own facts. I know a lot about the events I have showed up to. I am not there just to be visible. Quite frankly though if my opponent would answer yes to the people who have asked for a debate then we could see who knows what. But alas he is a people person and so he would rather talk to the people because he has determined that is what they want and not debate in front of them as they have asked.

In terms of experience I have been in Hartford for the last few years pushing on issues that are important to New Haven. That is easily verifiable. So, no I am not Bill (I never claimed to be) but don't try to act like this is about experience because if that is the case then the one in this race with experience operating at that level is me.

Paul.

If a debate is what people want, how bout the New Haven Independent host a debate between Blango and Winfield within their district? Something similiar to when you co-sponsored the last Mayoral debate at Gateway.

I will pay to see this debate!

Posted by: dixwell livin | July 22, 2008 4:02 PM

wait a second gary in another issue of the independnt on june 26 when they asked willie green if he agreed with Holder-Winfield's assertion that he's the candidate most closely resembling Dyson and Obama, willie said ""I think it's great to be a legend in one's own mind," Greene said, laughing, when told of Holder-Winfield's position.

the independant think that made it clear you was the next mr. dyson.

but whats more troubling is how angry and mad you sound in your response to my comment.

just curious what piece of legislation were you responsible for moving in hartford?

Posted by: Paul Bass [TypeKey Profile Page] | July 22, 2008 4:08 PM

We're always happy to sponsor candidate debates if all the candidates are interested in participating. Let us know.

Posted by: NewHaven1 | July 22, 2008 4:23 PM

Paul stated.. "We're always happy to sponsor candidate debates if all the candidates are interested in participating."

OK so all the pieces of the puzzle are falling into place. Winfield is interested in a debate, the New Haven Independent has agreed to sponsor, so how bout it Blango? All we need is you to except? What do you say?

Posted by: Gary Holder-Winfield [TypeKey Profile Page] | July 22, 2008 4:40 PM

If you go back and read the whole comment you will find that what I said was that I am not Obama or Dyson. I was then pressed and said that if we had to make that kind of a decision then I am the closest thing. That is no different that what I said in my previous post here - I am not Dyson.

As for angry - no. I was matter of fact. The facts are you are wrong in your assertion. Also, I did not "move a bill" because I am not elected there. Anyone who is not inside who claims that they moved the bill is exaggerating. Those bills are moved by a combination of many points of external pressure, legislators as advocates and the political climate when they arise. I have worked on many bills from the outside . I am working to educate legislators from different communities than mine about the community through testifying and one on one meetings. I have helped groups like PAI who spend more time than most know at the capitol to refine their message. And on and on. It is quite obvious that you are a Blango supporter and that is fine but what has he done there?

Posted by: 2FACED | July 22, 2008 4:42 PM

DIXWELL LIVIN-WILLIE GREEN ISN'T FIT TO LEAD A FOOD FIGHT LET ALONE BECOME THE NEXT STATE REPRESENTATIVE. ASK WILLIE IF THE CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY CAN COME TO HIS HOUSE FOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES...SINCE HE RODE THE Q-HOUSE INTO THE GROUND...BUT, WAIT DIDN'T HE ALSO HELP BROKER; A BACK DOOR DEAL TO SPLIT THE DIXWELL WARD UP INTO TO TWO SEPARATE WARDS? ISN'T THAT CALLED DIVIDE AND CONQUER? YOU MASTERED THE CONCEPT! NOW HE HAS A NEW REVELATION TO RUN FOR YET ANOTHER OFFICE...LET'S SEE: BOARD OF EDUCATION-THEY MOVED YOU, Q HOUSE-TO HELL IN A BASKET, ALDERMAN-GONE, MAYORIAL CANDIDATE-NO SUPPORT/DROPPED OUT, STATE REP AND BEYOND. THIS GUY WILL BE RUNNING FOR BUS MONITOR NEXT! WINFIELD IS THE REAL DEAL...LETS DEMAND A DEBATE AND MAY THE BEST MAN WIN!

There is only one question voters need to ask themselves: Are you better off today than you were two or more years ago?

That should lead voters to support Gary. Nothing has changed since Mr. Blango has entered public office, except that he got a job at the BOE. Crime is just as bad; schools are just as lackluster; property taxes are through the roof and the city is responsible for a lot more debt. Being part of the machine that abuses its citizens is a one way street that ends up with benefits for Blango. This is a no brainer. Support Gary.

The only way to make the changes this city needs is to start changing the politics. Votes for the same old same old, get the same. Or vote for change.

Posted by: sandstorm | July 23, 2008 9:33 AM

There are many of us, outside of the Dixwell area, who are supporting Gary Holder-Winfield. We do this because it is important to the efficacy of the New Haven delegation and its ability to negotiate on behalf of the entire city. Economic hardship will not be diminished in the near future; it is imperative that our representation be adequately educated and respected to influence financial assistance and state support of federal applications. It is difficult to imagine his opponent meeting this criteria.

Bill Dyson will be missed as he pursues his passion for justice with equality. Gary will
insure that the message is not lost while adding
new dimensions that are critical to our urban platform. We should all be grateful to him for
offering this public service.

2Face i wholeheartedly agree with you. I would follow me to a food fight either. Also for your clarification it was former Alderman Scott Marks that divided the ward. I did however have the opportunity to restore the ward to its original landscape and did not do so as it would at the time placed former Alderwoman Riddick outside the her ward and at the time she was attempting to purchase a home for herself, daughter and her grandchildren. As for your comments regarding the Dixwell Community House again you speak on a subject that you have no knowledge or insight of. However you the right to opinions its a free country. Lastly i was not removed from the New Haven Board of Education. I was given the choice to always agree with the administration or find other means of employment. I chose the latter. I have never wanted a position so badly that i would compromise what i believe in or hurt someone to maintain a job. I will however say one thing about the Q House. The only group that stepped up to the plate in an attempt to support the organization was New Haven Firebirds. Many made direct contributions to the program after taking the time to research all the facts. But yet my community professed to love the Q house with all its heart but did very little to make sure that the organization was on a solid financial foundation. Lastly allow me to enlighten you that over 80% of our funding came from the white community. However as i stated earlier there was so much going on in respect to the agency and as to why it closed its doors. But feel free to attack me anytime if it makes you feel better. Please know that i wish you the best in all you do. The last thing you need from me is to attack you. Just trying to make a living, take care of family (and whether i am or wrong)making a stand publicly is indeed an enormous undertaking.

Any one ask Blango if he would give the voters the right to a debate?? Or is he denying them that??

Posted by: 2FACED | July 23, 2008 2:55 PM

Willie-you have garnered a certain level of respect from me for your response. However, the seriousness of the situation in the 94th District is something that will impact the economic future of our city. GARY WINFIELD is the man for the job! You should not be in this race! You have been tied to so many things that have spelled DOOM in the community; another
re-run of you...for yet another office is like a revolving door spinning around again, again, again, again and again...lets face it this is nothing short of a REAL distraction. Align yourself with Winfield and give the people what they want!

Voters in this district need to ask a few MORE questions than the suggested "only" question.

August 12th is judgment day for these candidates.

Hopefully every eligible voter in this district will do their their due diligence and pick the right man who can fill Dyson's shoes.

If you're out-of-town on that date pick up you absentee ballots at city hall or vote there in person ASAP. More info at:

Or try New Naven Registrar of voters whose website obviously has not been updated in at least
5-months...

2face again as i stated before clearly you have the right to your opinion. While it is your right to support Gary. Allow me to say that i am very proud of my public service record and once again you make statements about about things that you have no real inside knowledge of. Having been here on this this terrestrial grain we call planet earth for sometime. I have learned that each time you make a stand there is a price you pay. The unfortunate aspect of taking a stand is far too often people react without being fully aware of the dynamics that took place that led to the final outcome. I have never been one to complain about what happened. And there is not one news article where those who have politically attacked me stated i was wrong or i did not know what i was talking about. Furthermore i have never chosen the political expedient course. Had i done so both my political and professional career would have been so much easier for my family and myself. I gathered enough signatures to participate in the primary but after speaking with those who are supporting me we decided to forgo the primary and i run as an independent democrat allowing me to make my case to the entire 94th district. I do appreciate the fact that i have gained a certain level of respect from you. However you have all my respect. You see i operate on the premises of "let us agree to disagree with being disagreeable and disrespectful while fully maintaining the level of respect that we all rightfully deserve. Lastly let me say i am a flawed man, not perfect. I have made mistakes and will most likely again make many more mistakes but i strive each day to be a better man for my family and the people i wish to represent.

Willie
fine will see you in November then.

But for now the issue is Gary and Blango. And the fact that their is no debate scheduled so that the public can see who is the more qualified!!!!

Posted by: bfair [TypeKey Profile Page] | July 24, 2008 5:38 PM

Who to choose should be easy for those who appreciated Bill Dyson's performance in Hartford. Who did Bill choose to fill his shoes? Gary was groomed by the best and spent countless hours at the legislative office building trying to get legislation passed to improve the plight of the less priviledged in our state. As a member of People Against Injustice he was on the streets, in the courtrooms and in Hartford doing what a leader should do and many haven't. My only worry is that people will register to vote and sit home on August 12th and if that happens you will have lost the one opportunity to put in office a REAL leader and one whom Bill chose to fill his shoes. I will await the debate date. It will be a real challenge for two and a breeze for one. That one should be the next state rep without question. Good luck. May the Best man win!!!
