Robber Sought

Cops are asking for help finding a suspect in a robbery Sunday evening. A man, pictured here in a surveillance camera photo, walked into the Grand Rodeo store at 347 Grand Ave. at 7 p.m., according to police. He demanded money. The clerk pretended she didn’t understand English.
The robber then reached into his back pocket, as though reaching for a weapon. He reached for his pocket a second time. The clerk opened the cash register, at which point the man reached in, stole a small amount of cash, and fled.
Police gave this description of the suspect: A white male, in his late 20s to early 30s, weighing 300 pounds, clean-shaven, with dark hair, glasses, and a Pittsburgh Steelers Jersey with 86 and “Ward” on the back. He was also wearing blue jeans and black and white sneakers. He was last seen traveling West on Grand Avenue.
Anyone with info on the crime is encouraged to call police at 946-6304.
In other crime news, according to Officer Joe Avery:
Crack House Busted
Noting a spate of shootings in the area, the statewide drug task force closed in on two alleged drug houses in Fair Haven last week. During the week leading up to July 10, there had been a flurry of shootings, with five to six victims struck by bullets in the area of Exchange and Lloyd Streets, according to police.
The task force got warrants to search 284 and 288/290 Exchange St., where they believed cocaine was being sold. On July 10, they raided the homes, seizing: “1.3 grams of crack cocaine packaged for sale, 26 bags of marijuana packaged for sale, 9 ecstasy pills, scales, packaging materials and drug paraphernalia.” Three men were arrested on narcotics charges.
Foot Chase
After a foot chase, cops arrested a man with a loaded gun who was wanted on a threatening complaint. He was caught Monday morning at 12:20 a.m. at Chapel St. & Winthrop Ave. The suspect, of Judson Avenue, charged with illegal gun possession, trespassing, and interfering with an officer, according to police.
Two Robberies
Four people were sitting in a car in front of 285 Edgewood Ave. when two people on trick bikes came up to the window. They were robbed at gunpoint of three cell phones, a chain and an iPod.
And a Yale post doc was mugged downtown at 2:31 a.m. on Sunday, according to Yale police.
The victim told police he was was robbed on Crown Street near York Street. He “was approached by 3 to 5 males on bicycles, 18 to 21 years of age, who demanded his wallet,” according to police.

He looks like possibly the laziest faux-armed robber in recent New Haven history. I agree with CHR: he shouldn't be too hard to catch!

Umm.. I think the police left out a major detail of the suspect in their description: he weighs 300lbs!! C'mon, maybe their just trying to be nice, but I think that's a lot to leave out. Maybe they didn't want people to confuse him with all the other obese men in New Haven; Lord knows there's plenty of 'em!! Let's hope this doesn't end in a police chase with a Hostess truck.

Anon, I made a similar comment. Are we really so PC that we cannot mention that a distinguishing characteristic of this gentleman is that he is very, very fat? Alas, I guess we are because that comment was not posted by the thought police. Let's see if this one makes it through unscathed.
[Ed: Apparently I omitted to say the suspect is 300 pounds. Omission unintentional. Melissa]

Ugh -- another professional athlete out of control. He's making millions of dollars -- shouldn't we expect Mr. Ward to be a better role model?
