Lunch Box Deflects Bullets

A 32-year-old man lay clinging to life after a shooting in Fair Haven early Tuesday, police said.

The victim was standing outside his home at 83 James St. at 4:24 a.m. Tuesday, waiting for a ride to work. Two men, ages 18 to 20, came up to him and demanded money, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery. The victim refused. One man produced a gun and fired four to five shots at the victim.

The victim held up a lunch box to deflect the bullets. Two of the bullets were blocked. Two hit him in his left side. After he was shot, he was struck in the head with a small pipe or bat by the second suspect.

The victim was rushed to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. He remained in the Emergency Room Tuesday afternoon, hospital officials said.

In other news, according to Avery:

A man was walking in the area of Clinton Avenue and Peck Street at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday when two men in masks came up to him and tried to rob him. “Put it up,” they said. The victim said he didn’t have any money. He was beaten with a bat in the head and stomach area.

And cops found 5 shell casings in front of 93 Shepard St. following reports of gunshots at 2:56 a.m. Tuesday. No victims or witnesses were found.

What's a lunch box? Do the cops carry them? Maybe I need one of those.
