A man who was shot while waiting for a ride Tuesday morning has come through alive. The 32-year-old was able to deflect two bullets by shielding himself with a lunch cooler. He took two bullets in the side, and was listed in critical condition, but was released Tuesday from the hospital.

In other news, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:

The city arson squad is looking into two fires last night.

One happened at 353 Winthrop Ave., where a second-floor bedroom went up in flames at 1:43 a.m. Wednesday. Firemen quickly put out the fire and no one was injured.

A second fire flared up at the Sylvan Deli at 129 Sylvan Ave. at 2:25 a.m. Firemen put out the flames “quickly,” according to Avery.

A man told police he was robbed at gunpoint in the alley of 580 George St. at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

And a man was riding a bicycle on Whalley and Sperry at 7:16 p.m. Tuesday when two male teens on bikes came up to him. They stole a bag of merchandise, then tried to take his bike. The victim escaped with his bike intact.

Good, quick thinking on using the lunch box. Talk about taking the bite out of crime.
