Detective Put On Leave

The police chief has put a controversial detective, Michael Hunter, on administrative leave for allegedly misusing the national crime database.

Chief James Lewis said he took the action Wednesday based on an internal investigation that began before he came to New Haven to run the department.

Lewis said Hunter will appear before the Board of Police Commissioners on Oct. 14 at a hearing on the charges. The board can then decide whether it wants to suspend, or fire, Hunter.

At this point no criminal charges have been brought against Hunter. “You could be found criminally for misuse of the database. At this point, this is just an internal civil matter,” Lewis said. “You can’t do anything personal with [the database]. That information is protected.”

Lewis declined to elaborate on the charges. “I can’t try this in the news,” he said.

Neither Hunter nor his attorney could be reached for comment.

Hunter is no stranger to accusations of wrongdoing. The attorney general accused Hunter and another then-official of the Silver Shields, an organization of black cops, of misappropriating $40,000 raised by the group for scholarships. Hunter, the organization’s former president, agreed last November to pay back $15,000; he didn’t acknowledge wrongdoing. The state’s attorney said he didn’t charge them with a crime because the statute of limitations had expired. (Read about that case here and here.)

Hunter was suspended in 2004 for 10 days for allegedly taking money from the department’s property room. Hunter claimed he was innocent and sued then-Chief Francisco Ortiz for allegedly violating his civil rights by suspending him.

Can he retire after 16 years?

I want to third that Chief Lewis is doing a fantastic job--and of course we don't know if this man is guilty or not, but we can see that our chief is looking out for us.

How many rotten apples does it take realize the whole barrel is bad? As to Lewis, he may prove to not be a stooge, but in 16 months it will be back to business as usual. I'm somewht suspicious of the timing of this announcement too, coming two days after the accident. It smells like Lewis is trying to hide a nasty PR mess under general sympathy and people's basic decency.

Ellis,

I think that's a cruel comment.

The police have been open that they are investigating the crash, & preliminary, it looks like the two officers couldn't hear each other over their own sirens.... it's a terrible tragedy, and there may have been a mistake on one of their parts, but I think it's cruel to call it a "PR mess"--it's a tragedy & maybe an accident, and hopefully we can remember the careers of these officers in a positive light, & see something positive happen as a result.... Different techniques for responding, different technology--who knows, but let's focus on turning this into something positive.

I hardly think Chief Lewis is firing someone to hide attention from a tragic loss. The Chief has nothing to be embarassed about--as a community member, he has my support 100%, and I'll trust him unless he proves us all wrong.

Ellis,
Another dumb ... comment from someone who has never served his community as a cop. The Hunter thing went down Tuesday night....before the accident. Plus ... don't you realize that a full investigation on his wrongdoings took place? Or how long that takes. ... Especially in the wake of what happened with two of our own, you still can't respect all the good apples. I hope you never need a cop!

Ellis

Will you ever be right on anything?. The announcement was made several hours before the tragic accident. Do you think the Chief is clairvoyant or something?

It just goes to show what dephths you'll go to push your agenda. You sir are truly classless.

Are you all kidding. I like this chief, but it took the FBI - they raided the place last year, remember? They switched out the internal affairs head, remember????

As to Hunter -- the can you report in your story whether the victim will be notified? Reporters never even ask. The victim whose information was violated should have a right to know it happened, but unless these agencies are forced to through public or legal pressure, they rarely do.

Hail to the Chief...
I like this guy too regardless of whether or not he can take credit for this.
It just feels like things are happening for the better and the department is making progress even if they're up against a bad economy, rising crime and a dwindling budget.
Kudos Chief Lewis.
