IMAGE_039.jpgThe Center Street Lounge has been shut down for 10 days after an undercover investigation revealed underage drinking and beer pong at the club.

The club, at 84 Orange St., has agreed to pay a fine of $10,000 and have its liquor license suspended from Sept. 8 to 17, according to a deal struck with the Department of Consumer Protection’s Liquor Control Division.

The penalties stem from an undercover probe conducted by agents from the New Haven police and liquor control departments.

Agents entered the club on Oct. 30, 2007, in response to complaints of underage drinking, according to John Suchy, director of the liquor control division.

When the got inside, they allegedly spotted five minors buying alcohol from barroom staff, as well as 14 minors in the barroom, both in violation of state law. Agents also detected a drinking game being played called beer pong, where players plop ping-pong ball into cups of beer, then make their opponents chug. Hosting drinking games at a club is in violation of liquor department regulations, Suchy said.

During the bust, agents also allegedly found three bottles of liquor containing fruit flies.

A year later, the department settled with the club over what the penalty should be. The club agreed to a negotiated settlement, which is not an admittance of wrongdoing, Suchy said.
