Major Fish Kill in Branford River

by Marcia Chambers | September 8, 2008 4:15 PM | | Comments (10)

DSC00096.JPGHundreds of dead fish washed up on the banks of the Branford River. The fish, of all sizes, were found floating near boats and in the wetlands.

It is not yet known what caused the massive fish kill, but their appearance in Branford Harbor came shortly after hide tide at 4:35 p.m. Saturday.

About two years ago, a similar die-off occurred in the same river at about the same time of year. A state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) investigation concluded that the fish, then identified as Menhasen or Bunker, died as a result of a lack of oxygen. They had come too far up river, perhaps pursued by blue fish and/or striped bass. The result was too many fish in too small an area, giving rise to a shared lack of oxygen.

DSC00089.JPGFirst Selectman Unk DaRos said the predatory blue fish were in high gear in Stony Creek this weekend and likely pushed the bunkers into the estuaries where they ran out of oxygen. “I have seen it happen many times,” he said.

The Branford River has also been subject to man-made industrial polluters. According to Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, the Atlantic Wire Company, located on the Branford River, several blocks from the fish kill, was deemed one of the state’s worst polluters, discharging toxic waste into the Branford River more than two dozen times over a period of years.

Blumenthal said an illegal toxic discharge in September 2007 killed hundreds of blue crabs in the Branford Harbor.

IMG_0318.JPGAtlantic Wire, which has manufactured industrial wire for the last 102 years, filed for bankruptcy last month and is now in the process of closing down.

The company’s demise came roughly eight months after Blumenthal sued Atlantic Wire on behalf of DEP Commissioner Gina McCarthy. He won a court injunction in March, 2008 which forced Atlantic Wire to stop discharging any waste water into the Branford River until it installed equipment to automatically halt outflows that exceed permitted levels.

At the time Blumenthal was blunt about the company’s activities. “Atlantic Wire’s environmental record is reprehensible and repugnant — repeatedly dumping poison into the Branford River,” he said.

“Our action compels the company to do what it should have done years ago — install a shutoff automatically stopping discharges that exceed state permits. The company’s failure to take these steps is shocking, showing callous contempt for state law, the environment, and human health.

“We will continue to vigorously and aggressively pursue our lawsuit against Atlantic Wire, fighting for fines and tough conditions. I will battle to hold the company accountable for poisoning the Branford River in bold, barefaced defiance of state law.”

At the time Branford resident Scott Thayer was the company’s executive vice-president. A member of the RTM, Thayer was a key player in the prior administration of First Selectman Cheryl Morris. He currently heads the RTM’s Ways and Means Committee. Thayer said in response to an e-mail query that he left the company in May. At that time he had not been involved in any discussions regarding a settlement “or what fines might factor into it.”

As part of the bankruptcy proceedings, the company has apparently set aside funds in connection with its environmental violations, .

Meanwhile, residents report that the blue crab has yet to return to the Branford River this year.

The Branford River is also home to Ospreys and other fish-eating birds. Environmentalists who study the birds have noticed a decrease in their population this year.

Some residents say they are concerned because they believe the bird ecology of the area has been disrupted as a result of the company’s illegal dumping.

Marcia! It seems to me - and others - Scott Thayer, as head of the Ways and Means, is far more KEY in the Da Ros administration than he ever was in the Morris administration. Kicking Cheryl Morris around is no longer the town sport. You demean yourself.

Thank you for exposing in the press this important environment condition in our own home town,Maybe the so called "Print Media" will pick it up from your labors.

Nicely done Marcia. Well written.
This is caused by hypoxia, lack of oxygen in the water to support the amount of fish. The DEP considers 3.5 [parts per million] as hypoxic. Meaning less oxygen than most fish need to function well. This is a yearly recurrence all along the CT cost the CTpost had an article recently on the die off in Milford. Although there has been question as to any connection with Atlantic Wire closing amongst the locals. Personally I believe it is just nature taking it's own toll. Warm water, low oxygen, lots of bunker and hungry bluefish.

Susan Barnes comments are accurate. Marcia's reporting is only slanted blogs for elitist liberals for Lonnie Reed and this 1st Selectmen. When Sandra Reiners, Moderator of the RTM states the lawyers fees on Tabor is money well spent further examples of no accountability. Reiner's also sets the RTM agenda and also is a vice chairperson of the town democratic party.

Not being a scientist I have to defer the cause of this die-off to others with more knowledge. I only hope as Joe eluded in previous post that it was mother nature doing her thing.

What caught my attention in this article was the fact that Scott Thayer (Democrat on RTM) was an executive with Atlantic Wire, a company now closing its doors after several legal bouts with Attorney General Blumenthal for their disregard of the environmental impacts their operations had on the Branford River.

This leads me to ask why the Branford Democrat Party would support an individual for public office whose company at the time of the election was proven to be a major polluter in the Town of Branford. An individual whose company at the time of the election was being sued by the Democrat AG Blumenthal for environmental violations? Did they not do their homework in choosing members of their ticket? Were they concerned with leaving a RTM seat open on the ballot?

Branford Residents we need to do a better job when choosing our public officials to make sure we try and get to know each and every person we vote for before submitting our ballot, we just cannot rely on the "Party-line" each election, one bad apple can ruin the bunch.

Please read September 10, 2008 New Haven Register, which provides the facts. The problems were not caused by Scott Thayer or Cheryl Morris as Marcia Chambers alluded to. Joe Lynch also provided the above facts, as confirmed in the Register. It is important blogs are somewhat accurate and Marcia's biased in favor of 1st Selectman Daros is obvious. Don't worry, this !st selectmen will win again simply because of the Republicans are controlled by John Opie, who as people say, is more concerned about fellow people from Stony Creek first, not the town. John will ensure Daros, both from Stony Creek will win. This democratic controlled RTM, which I agree with Joyce are elitist liberals has serious problems, which is controlled by the 1st selectman.

Pam, to be clear, I do not for one minute blame Scott Thayer or Cheryl Morris for the fish die-off.

I do however blame the Branford Democrat Town Committee for putting Mr. Thayer and Mrs. Morris on their ticket.

People are complaining about the mess the Morris Administration put this town in. Let's not forget who put the Morris Administration in office, the Branford DTC...

I also ask you to elaborate on your statement that Mr. Opie cared more about the Creek than he did the town while in office. I don't recall one single decision he made as First Selectman that would imply he did.

Sorry to mention anything as inconvenient as the facts, Mojito, but:

Thayer and Mrs. Morris have never run on the same ticket.

DTC nominated candidates for RTM in July, 2007.

The election was in November, 2007.

The AG's action on behalf of the DEP wasn't filed until late January, 2008.

Just saying....

Hey MEIGUODZOUGOU, I think you're incorrect. Thayer ran as an RTM member on the same ballot as when Mrs. Cheryl Morris ran as First Selectwoman. He was also one of her strongest supporters, along with John Smith - Ms. Morris's side kick, Lisa Avitable, Jan Doyle, Ralph Coppola, Kevin O'Donald, and others. I think YOU are incorrect................

Posted by: Mojito, T.E. | September 16, 2008 10:18 PM

MEIGUODZOUGOU you are incorrect. The fact is that Scott Thayer was endorsed by the Branford DTC, not once, but twice in the past two elections. Once as a member of the Morris/Sullivan Ticket and then again this past election as a member of the DaRos/Walsh ticket. And the AG's actions go back to Sept 07, election was Nov. 07. Sorry....but those are the facts.
