EMT Disarms Knife-Wielder

When medics picked up a drunk man, they found themselves on a wild and dangerous ride to the hospital. Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:

EMTs from American Medical Response responded to the Grand Avenue Bridge on report of an intoxicated person Thursday.

They found a 46-year-old man in the parking lot of the Grand Vin package store. He appeared to be drunk. As they took him in the ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital, he “pulled a small pocket knife from his pants pocket and pointed it the EMT’s neck and threatened to cut him.”

The EMT grabbed the knife away and escaped injury. The patient then threatened to jump out of the ambulance. When they arrived at the hospital, hospital security restrained him. He was arrested and charged with Assault on a Public Safety personnel, Reckless Endangerment First and Breach of Peace Second.

Cadillac Snatched

A man was forced out of his Cadillac while driving through Fair Haven, according to Avery. The incident happened at 10 p.m. Thursday. He was driving a red Cadillac DeVille on Wallace Street toward Grand Avenue when two cars sandwiched him from the front and the back. Several men got out of their cars and ordered him out of his car. The victim complied. The perps jumped into his Caddy and drove away.

Dixwell Ave Shooting

A 21-year-old man from Starr Street was shot in Newhallville at 10:51 p.m. Thursday. He told police he was standing near the corner of Bassett Street and Dixwell Avenue when someone shot him in the hand.

Cops: Gun Sale Stopped

Cops interrupted an alleged gun sale outside the Walgreens at 415 Foxon Blvd Thursday evening. Officers D. Rivera and Miranda got a tip that someone was going to try to sell a gun there. They set up surveillance at the Walgreens. At 5:56 p.m., a car rolled up. Inside the car was a Shelton man with a .22 caliber gun with the serial number scratched off, according to police. The man was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, weapon in a motor vehicle, and altering an id on a firearm.

Howard Ave Fire

And six families, 16 adults and 10 kids, were left without a home after a fire swept through the third floor of 627-629 Howard Ave. The fire was contained to one unit.
