Daylight Mugging At Edgewood Park

A 33 year-old woman walking in Edgewood Park was punched twice and then robbed Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 1:25 p.m.

The woman was walking near the foot bridge past the dog run, that connects the road through the park with the woods on the other side of the West River. The mugger took her wallet and fled. The woman screamed.

A friend of the woman happened to be riding his bike through the park at the time on his way home from work. He rode after the mugger on the dirt path, caught up with him, and confronted him. He demanded that the mugger give him the bag he was carrying. The mugger did. He also flashed a screwdriver, and got away.

It turned out the bag had other people’s wallets in it, but not the woman’s.

The block watch is circulating an as-yet unconfirmed report that two 14-year-olds may have been mugged in the park, too.

Another mugging was reported in Newhallville at 9:23 p.m. Sunday. Here’s what happened, according to Officer Joe Avery:

An 18-year-old from Sheldon Terrace was walking on Bassett Street when two men came up to him. One had a gun. “Give me your stuff,” the mugger said.

The victim turned over his T-mobile cell phone, iPod and $25. The suspects fled toward Shepard Street.

And a delivery man from “Blessings To Go” reported being carjacked while making a delivery near Middletown Avenue in Fair Haven Heights. The delivery man was delivering to 20 Donna Dr. When he got to the house at 6:45 p.m. Monday, he was met by a man in his 20s. The man punched him in the head and jumped into his car. A second man jumped into the passenger’s seat. They zoomed away in the delivery car, a 2005 Toyota Corolla. The car was later found, running and unoccupied, in front of 766 Russell St.

I don't know if its smart or dumb, but that the guy on bike who confronted the mugger has got balls the size of church bells and New Haven needs more good solid citizens like him.

Well then, ruffians... Time to put a flare gun on order to use as a "cycling personal defense system"... Let's see how your screwdriver holds up to some red hot flare action! OH yeah! >:D

Good Samaritan Fact:

Just to add to the list, my very good friend was walking home from work the evening of August 25th and was assalted at Pendleton and Elm. Hit from behind with a pipe or something and then beaten as he lay on the ground. Never saw the group of thugs- only remembers more than one voice as they pummeled him. Disgusting.
