Former Colony Inn Reborn

So long, Colony. Meet the “Study @ Yale.”
After two years of construction, the city’s former Colony Inn at 1157 Chapel St. has reopened, two stories higher, and quite a few steps more upscale.
The “Study @ Yale,” as the hotel is being called, welcomed its first guests for a soft opening Tuesday. The new outfit is owned by the New York-based company Hospitality 3.
Aldermen topped off the project at their full board meeting Thursday by approving a new canopy over the valet parking entrance. The canopy had already been erected, but the owners didn’t know they had to seek approval, said Alderwoman Erin-Sturgis Pascale.
During a visit Thursday, workers were scurrying to put on the final touches to the downstairs lobby, including a new iMac. Michael Dezura, the hotel’s general manager, gave the Independent a sneak peak at the new look behind the glass facade.
The hotel has 124 rooms ranging in price from $279 to $1,400 per night. That’s quite a change from the Colony, which was built in 1963, and had been showing its age.
The new digs include seven “studies” — units with a bedroom, plus a study area (pictured), complete with shelves of hard-cover books and framed pictures of Yale. The hotel is now seven, instead of five stories tall. It includes a private lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows.
The Colony’s old restaurant and bar, a popular spot for happy hour and karaoke, has been revamped into a “Modern American” eatery. The restaurant, called Heirloom, opened Wednesday. The menu includes an appetizer of roasted beets with “old chatham goat cheese” and spiced walnuts, for $13. Entrees include roasted amish chicken with herb gnocchi, for $19.
City approvals for the project came after a bumpy road: The project was first rejected by the Board of Zoning Approvals after protest from some Yale graduate students who argued against the project because of alleged parking issues they had.
Developers shook off the rejection and tried again. As of Thursday, about half of the hotel was open. The rest should open next week, said Dezura.

$1,400? Please. Let's see a picture of THAT room! I guess it's for the Clintons when they visit.

I stayed there last night as I am a frequent guest in New Haven and I was horrified at the service. It took awhile to check in and the staff had no idea what they were doing. Perhaps they are new and have not been trained properly.
The rates of $279 are ridiculous for New Haven and this New York company who owns the company obviously does not know or want to cater to the New Haven market.
I have large groups and I will continue to frequent the lovely Omni New Haven Hotel where the employees are dedicated to make the public feel special.
At $279 with poor service, how will this hotel survive?

NYRESIDENT,
Dude...they just opened...give them a few weeks at least...besides, I just checked the standard rate for tomorrow evening at the Omni...$359.
You work for them or something?
I'm really happy that New Haven has a really cool hotel.

NYResident, New Haven has a very high hotel occupancy rate, and the rates and high-end hotels will reflect that. Given the number of international conferences hosted at Yale, and its burgeoning medical center, the hotel should have no trouble charging $300 per room, if not more. I would now expect other area hotels to raise their rates up to this level.
If you're staying in New Haven, would you rather drive 45 minutes to stay at a crappy Motel 6?
I think you have a misconception about New Haven, which is part of the wealthiest metropolitan area in the United States (Southern CT) and home to one of the world's top two universities.
You might want to give this place a week to open before rating its service level.

Prices? If managers can't make a profit, prices will come down. We'll see. Meantime, looks like a good restaurant.

NY resident, where do you usually stay in New Haven, at a shelter? $279 per night is well within the 'going rate' of any New England city. I never suggest anyone stay at a hotel or hit a restaurant on opening night. The service is never what you expect it to be as the kinks are always being worked out. If you don't know this, now you do. I'm sure this new hotel will do just fine. Welcome "Study @ Yale"!

Jesus Christ, chill out. They just opened up. Most business hit some bumps when opening.

You work for them or something?
I think you hit the nail on the head. Seems like a little corporate saboptage going on maybe? Trash the competition anonomously.

can they get themselves a name worthy of the goodlooking re-model? for instance: Bespoke is a damn cool name. I still don't know what a Bespoke is, but it sounds cool (and sharp). Study @ Yale sounds like the headline on a cheap brochure. And don't even tell me that you're supposed to call it ""The Study"". what, so people can say "I'm going to study?" New Haven needs better names for places. Another recent bad one was Koffee on York becoming the Publick Cup. I saw that and I thought Are you kidding me? Are we in Old Sturbridge village or something? Bad enough to live somewhere where they name a coffee joint ""Koffee"" and a bar ""Bar""
New Haven needs new names!

Being a skeptic , I checked your claim of $279 per night at the Omni, which seemed way too high..
Best rate I could get, after supposed AAA and senior discount was $323.10 for a single.
WOW,Sorry I doubted you.
Happy I no longer travel frequently.

WALT,
279 was the rate that NYRESIDENT claimed was way too high.
359 was the standard weekend rate I found on the Omni site.
Travel is quite expensive and it really depends more upon when you go than where you go. I recently visited medium sized midewestern city, whcih I don't consider to be expensive, and I paid similar rates to stay in a Holiday Inn Express way outside of the center becuase they happened to have two simultaneous major sports events going on at the smae time.
...supply and demand I guess...

it's parents' weekend at yale this weekend, that is likely why the prices seem a little steep i think.

Check the rates in January..OMNI $189 You picked Parents weekend which is almost as high as Yale graduation.

NYRESIDENT,
PLEASE.
You stayed at the Study the Thursday before Parents Weekend, which is effectively the same thing. Its apples to apples dude.
