:) whiner 1 here :)

I am sure their are people at the least considering a run at it.

And I guess we would have to look at from all angles. What if Johnny did not run. We could end up with limited chooses and get stuck with someone that could not do the job. But why could John not step down and sponsor someone he felt was up to the job. Even if it was one of his guys. A fresh new look at things. I don't know. I guess we will have to wait and see who decides to run.

Green
Ferrucci
Newton
Goldson

John will get my vote if this was the case.

"But why could John not step down and sponsor someone he felt was up to the job. Even if it was one of his guys."

I thought that I had finally gotten through to you, but you've lapsed back to bad thinking habits.

You call that change? C'mon! What you are advocating is the political equivalent of changing a dirty diaper. Might take care of the immediate issue and smell for a bit, but the same s#*t returns within a short time. For a real change, vote the entire machine out! Vote Republican!! Rick Elser is quite up to the job.

Fedup
Ricks name is not on my list is it ;)

Posted by: James | October 10, 2008 7:17 PM

Rick may be up to the job, but it didn't much seem that he's up to actually getting the job the last time around. His campaign didn't make a dent. We need somebody who can not only do the job but who has the ability to inspire people to get out and make a difference. If the last election was any indication, Rick just doesn't have the organization and support to mount a serious challenge.

So who else is there? What's the dream ticket?

Paul:

You have been in the city for a long time. How about combing through all the articles and profile the Mayor's record, both good and bad. I would love one resource to go through old press clippings on this topic, etc...

Thanks.

Give TONY BLAIR an ID card, and let him take a break from sermoning at Yale everyday.

Posted by: eddie | October 11, 2008 6:01 PM

Um paul, as they say on WFAN "first and last here".
YOU are the biggest whiner in new haven hands down.
You seem to be confident and in charge, why have you never thrown you hat into the mayoral ring?
You bitch and moan and complain and keep reporting on the administration, then you cave (like this little gem) wtf?
Why haven't you put your drachmas where your Boca esta?

What democracy? I see an Oligarchy.

Posted by: Ellis Copeland | October 12, 2008 2:42 AM

There is no democracy in New Haven, only a corrupt machine riddled with graft. That said, the good burghers of this hamlet seem quite content with it. Don John was vulnerable in two recent cycles and even Martin Looney couldn't bring him down. Sadly, he will be mayor till he drops dead or gets a corporate (or Yale) gig that pays him to do nothing-- if he can wean himself off the power trip. All the griping in the world won't change that. The only thing that will change it is when the honest people get fed up with getting the shaft. Recent vote totals suggest that's a long way off.

Greene would be an excellent candidate for mayor. Throughout his career he has refused to allow himself to be compromised or brought by the democratic party and one of a few that when he spoke on the aldermanic floor knew exactly what he was talking about. Never have you read when the administration would respond to Greene where they said he was wrong or his facts were incorrect. They instead would launch personal attacks against him or attempt to discredit him or falsely accuse him of of improperly running the Q House. In a meeting the question was asked of mayor DeStefano can you provide the documentation where Greene mismanaged the organization. I have found no report in this city or in Hartford. I am still waiting for the report from the mayor. Nevertheless Greene has endured all the attacks by the administration. He continues to give voice to those who have none or those of us feeling disconnected from this one party system. In his last attempt to run for mayor Greene addressed a number of issues that the city completely ignored and as taxpayers are now and will have to pay for. I have found him to be a very personable, charming, caring and compassionate man that clearly knows this city and understands the needs of the many communities that make New Haven. I wish him well in his for run State Representative he will be a valuable asset to the sitting state delegation and to the 94th district. However we need a man like Greene in City Hall. Folks he is really worth listening too.

Mike
Green and Newton Need to come to the realization they will not win. What they need to do is put their time and effort into finding a qualified candidate that can win. This next year should be a very exciting one.

Some oservations

DeStefano gave himself a fat pay rise when he knew the city was in trouble financially. Any self respecting leader would have taken a pay cut to improve the morale of city workers. Instead he laid many off.

DeStefano has gone thru 6 CAOs since 2000.
Whetstone
Horan
Du Bois Walton
Pugh
Buturla
Smutts

About 18 months each. Use them, abuse them, then dump them. He would do the same to the citizens of New Haven if he was elected governor.

The people being named as potential replacements are all basket cases. No doubt their names have been put forward by DeStefano's machine. Henry Fernandez is missing as he would be a better choice than the others. Payback for not winning the governors job.

Smartest of all is wrecking the city's finances. No one will want to run as mayor now as they know they are doomed.

I am from Westville and both Greene and Newton are qualified. I am a bit more partial to Greene because I have taken the opportunity to speak with him and I admire the fact that he over the years has had the the courage to stand for what is right. He took serious heat when he as the lone alderman stood against pay raises for the mayor and his executive staff. Look at his extensive experience and resume of public service to this city you will definitely be impressed. Speak with the man before you say he is not qualified or can't win or he should spend his time finding someone who can win. Listen to his ideas and allow him to share his vision before you shoot him down. Besides what has DeStefano done for us except take care of himself and run deficit after deficit. Greene recently spoke at a business dinner here in the city and most walked away impressed with his ideas, his knowledge of this city, the delivery of human services and the education system and its people. He spoke passionately about a greater investment in people while maintaining a realistic development and investment strategy in brick and mortar but not at the expense of the taxpayer. He spoke of how we as a city must change the mindset of how we conduct business in the city and state. He went on to speak about a real partnership with the universities and trade schools in the Greater New Haven Community to help develop a challenging curriculum for the education system that will make our college bound children ready and provide entry level skills for the students who are not looking at college. Quite frankly Greene would be a breath of fresh air given the current administration.

Newton was incapable of submitting the papers when he last "ran" for Mayor. This blogger says both Greene and Newton are qualified. Of the 2 he supports Greene. Does this mean Green is capable of submitting the papers. He must be a DeStefano shill.

Mike
Many are not happy with Johnny right now but sorry to say he is qualified. As seen in the last election people are smart enough to know that to vote John out with a person that is not capable is alot worse than keeping him. I am in agreement with "Memory Loss" you must work for town hall.

Posted by: Mike | October 13, 2008 9:32 AM

CEDARHILLRESIDENT Never worked for City Hall or the City of New Haven. Never had the opportunity like the mayor to bleed or should I say pimp the public taxpayers to death like the mayor has done since age 19. The only other job he had ever held outside of the city was director of Pilot Pen. By the way that was made possible by former mayor Daniels. Also let us not forget Johnny is so qualified that in a city of roughly 127,000 the mayor barely got 9,000 thousand votes. As to him being qualified is debatable. And lets not talk talk about Henry. He along with the mayor is responsible for the mess were in. I am also very clear with the fact that the mayor controls the media which makes it difficult for anyone to compete. Also each year the mayor thanks to the superintendent of schools forces administrators, contractors, etc to contribute to his mayoral campaign. I am exploring all the avenues however Fernandez will not be one of them. He along with the mayor, Frank Alterei, the mindless Board of Aldermen and a long cast of others have created a huge mountain of debt for you, me and all of the hard working taxpayers of this city. No Johnny is no more qualified than anyone else. Its just that every other candidate that attempts to run we never let then out of the gate without attacking them and deemed them as unqualified.

Paul, please continue being a reporter. I've valued your writing and dedication to this berg for years and years.

Does anyone have sway with Jello Biafra? He's the limit.

[aside]
Steven Ross: Like, wow! Perhaps we should serve as foils for each other being that our names are so similar. I'll take Spock.

What about the state rep Bob Megna ? He is an honest good elected official. He is fiscally responsible and team player. Lets put him on the list too. He always bucked the local machine.

Posted by: Mike | October 14, 2008 7:48 PM

Hi Memory Loss: Yes Greene is capable of submitting the required papers and he is not a DeStefano shill. Greene by all accounts could have become apart of the DeStefano/Mayo team and would be earning a six figure salary like the rest of the overpaid administrators. He chose to leave rather than become a DeStefano groupie. Since his departure he has always been a target of the administration because of his courage to stand up and do the right thing. Furthermore, he is extremely qualified to administering the affairs of this city.

Mike
So does this mean he knows he is losing the State Rep race?

Posted by: Mike | October 15, 2008 11:06 AM

CEDARHILLRESIDENT: Lets see. Community Activist/Organizer but no one can find anything he has organized in New Haven. Oh yes his claim to fame is that he was an intern to Dyson. What does that mean? Cheap labor and running errand's for Rep. Dsyon. Winfield was Chairman of the Democrats of The Future while still residing in Stamford, CT a group controlled by Wendell Harp and let us not forget Mr. Harp also gave us Brian Jenkins. Boy that was a stroke of genius. I can only guess that No it does not mean Greene knows he losing. I just know that I would much rather go with with experience rather than with someone who has lived here less than a year and has no legislative experience. Winfield another stroke of genius by Mr. Harp and company. Also let us not forget the succession of losers Harp has backed for mayor.
