Rules of the Road

Dear Readers:
In general we have loved your comments and the give and take of ideas about issues facing the Branford community. But in recent months anonymous comments posted by readers using phony e-mail addresses have disrupted the normal give and take of community exchange.
As we continue to study this issue, we ask that you consider submitting comments to the Branford Eagle in the same way you would if you were writing to the weekly shoreline publications, which require your full name along with other verifiable information.
Your good name stands for your standing and reputation in the community; it carries far greater weight than if you post a comment anonymously. Readers should understand this and question the motives of those who post anonymously.
However, given that we are an on-line newspaper, we will not reject anonymous postings. The New Haven Independent has policies regarding postings and the Branford Eagle hereby incorporates them and adds new ones as well.
We ask that if you post anonymously that you use only one e-mail address so that we may reach you in case we need to makes changes to your comment. We are often receiving multiple postings from one or two people.
By submitting a comment, you agree to consent to these rules. We ask you to be civil, to remove harsh personal attacks, uncorroborated factual allegations and rumors.
We also ask that you not submit content that is libelous or defamatory, predatory, hateful or, most importantly, intended to intimidate or harass.
We ask that you not misrepresent your identity or affiliation and that you not impersonate others. In short, we ask for honesty.
We have checked with the way other on-line newspapers have dealt with anonymous postings and our statements are consistent with theirs.
We do read your submissions and we want you to know that we may remove content that we deem inappropriate for any reason whatsoever and without your consent.
We may also remove the entire posting if we believe it violates any of the rules above. We also retain the right to remove a user’s privilege to post on the Branford Eagle’s site.
We are taking these steps in order to provide an open, free exchange of ideas on the topics covered by the Branford Eagle. We ask that your comments address the topics raised in the columns.
We thank you again for your support.
Marcia Chambers
Editor, Branford Eagle

Thank you, Marcia, for instituting this policy. Your hard work in reporting issues important to the town of Branford deserve, at the very least, civility in return.

Yours is a policy that is the practice of other responsible news journals. We readers should expext nothing more and nothing less.

"We do read your submissions and we want you to know that we may remove content that we deem inappropriate for any reason whatsoever and without your consent."
Sounds like censorship......

Marcia,
Its really entertaining that you could misguide so many people. It appears you really believe the nonsense you spin. Your readers don't know any better. But you do. John H is right on...Censorship.

I was pleased to see this policy.
It has been noticed (by me and many others) that general civility and manners have gone away. I know that tempers may run high on various "hot"issues...but print is NOT the place to show it off.
