Two Arrested In Theft of Fantasy Of Lights

Police have arrested a Branford couple who allegedly jeopardized holiday cheer by stealing thousands of dollars of wire from the Fantasy of Lights display at Lighthouse Park.
The drive-through holiday light show is a benefit for Easter Seals. The non-profit group has seen an outpouring in support since $6,000 in wire was stolen from the display on Nov. 11.
After the theft, the suspects sold the wire to a New Haven scrap metal yard, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery. Cops sent out an alert to scrap metal yards. Staff were very cooperative at the yard that had bought the wire, Avery said. Cops got a good description, with photos, and put out wanted posters for the suspects. Tuesday at about 2 p.m., New Haven and Branford cops went to the couple’s home, where they were were arrested.
For cracking the case, the department credited Officer David Murgo, Detective Matt Deleo and Det. Scott Branfuhr, an Independent Cop of the Week.
Undeterred, the show is set to open on Friday, through Dec. 31.

Awesome! Now as punishment, they should give back the money to the scrap yard, and the wire should go back to Easter Seals. Then, they should do enough community service to raise an additional $6,000 for Easter Seals, just so they know how hard someone else would've had to work to raise that money to buy new copper wire. That'll teach 'em better than any prison sentence.

I would love to know what scrap yard that was.

---and the scrap yard folks had no idea that the wire was stolen as there are so many folks who have hundreds of feet of wire laying around their property and decide to junk it.
It's like the manholes with NHWater cast into them, Naturally the scrap yard guy does not suspect that they are stolen when some jerk brings them in for cash.
Need better regulation of scrap yards, better laws or better enforcement.
That the scrap yards "cooperate" with lawmen after they are caught with stolen goods means little. They are the main part of the problem, not a solution.

--- and the money should be forfeited to the Town not given to the co=conspirator scrap yard as Josh suggests

I didn't suggest that the scrap yard conspired with the thieves. On the contrary -- the article says that the scrap yard cooperated with police and turned the thieves in, which was the right thing to do.

I do think that these two will get little time for this but my suggestion is on top of what time they get they should do a LARGE amount of volunteer work at Easter Seals!
