Hearing Requested On Surveillance Cams

A couple months after video cameras popped up on downtown streets, aldermen are calling for a hearing to see if they can be regulated.
In a proposal drafted Monday, three aldermen call for a public hearing “to determine the authority of the City to regulate electronic surveillance devices.”
Click here to read the proposed order, which is sponsored by Aldermanic President Carl Goldfield, Dwight Alderwoman Gina Calder, and Fair Haven Alderwoman Migdalia Castro.
The Independent reported last week that the West Chapel Special Services District, under the management of Brian McGrath, has erected two video cameras on Chapel Street.
The news stirred some public outcry about privacy rights, and the fear that the government would start playing Big Brother. McGrath and other proponents argued that the cameras would only be used to fight crime, and that there should be no expectation of privacy on a public street. Click here for a lively debate on the subject in the Independent’s comments section.
As it stands, the city’s Code of Ordinances does not regulate the use of video surveillance. In their order, the aldermen ask for a hearing to see what type of surveillance is permissible under state and federal law, and what right the city may have to further protect people’s privacy.

Thomas Jefferson once said, " Those who trade essential Liberty for temporary security, deserve neither Liberty nor Security".

This may get interesting. There are already countless cameras set up all over the city -- banks, apartment entrances, parking lots, highway cams, etc. Many of these cameras focus on public sidewalks and streets. If the city ends up regulating these cameras it will have an enormous impact on a lot of businesses.
Currently, I am allowed to photograph public scenes and use my personal video recorder anywhere in public. Does the city have the authority to tell me I can't take pictures in public? This will definitely be an interesting legal battle if the city takes it on.

GOOD POINT! Our property's have cam's on them, to protect the tenants. Many a time cops have called to review them to see if they picked up something on the street near the buildings! Would this mean that we would have to take them down?

there is no reasonable expectation of privacy in a public space.
Parks St in Hartford also uses cameras as a crime deterrent as do countless property owners. It works. Thank goodness for well run Special Services Districts that are looking out for the common good.

Put cameras in City Hall, every NHPD vehicle, and that white table cloth restaurant on upper State St., and while your at it, might as well bug all of those places too. Also, can we make Bitsie Clark's official theme song: Me and Mrs. Jones"? - what's she hiding?

tee hehe Ned.
If we get rid of Vinny's cam's on Chapel looks like Dr. Mel is going to have to take down his too, and traffic cam on the highway, Security cams at stores and in their parking lots, ATM's and property across the city all have public view cam's they rule against these cam's guess what they create a loop whole for people to sue and make any property with a cam up for grabs! Be careful people. their are more cams out their than anyone realizes. This is a major decision!
