Holder-Winfield Wins Big

He launched his campaign inspired by Barack Obama — and became New Haven’s newest elected official on the same night that his role model headed for the White House.
Gary Holder-Winfield declared his victory Tuesday evening after four of the six wards reported in the 94th General Assembly District.
“Welcome to Hartford,” said New Haven State Rep. Toni Walker, giving the candidate a hug.
The unofficial returns showed the Democratic candidate clobbering independent challenger Willie Greene in what was seen as the only remotely contested race for the state legislature in New Haven this year. Holder-Winfield and Greene were competing to replace retiring State Rep. Bill Dyson in a district that spans the Newhallville, Dixwell, East Rock and downtown neighborhoods.
Holder-Winfield declared victory at 9 p.m. with four of six of the wards in the 94th district reporting. He was winning 3,628 to 755 at that point.
Results on the machine were:
Ward 19: Holder-Winfield 1,096; Greene 78
Ward 20: Holder-Winfield 1,030; Greene 399
Ward 21: Holder-Winfield 660; Greene 211
Ward 22: Holder-Winfield 842; Greene 67
Holder-Winfield paused for an interview before entering the downtown Playwright bar, where, under an arc of patriotic balloons, Democrats cheered at each small victory for presidential nominee Barack Obama.
The two campaigns’ messages were intertwined from the start.
Holder-Winfield, an early organizer for Obama’s campaign in Connecticut, said he certainly got a lift by being on the same party line as Obama. The bigger lift, he said, was the shared message of hope and an Obama-inspired movement getting disenfranchised people engaged in politics.
“The messages of the campaign coincided; that was really good for my campaign,” he said.
“Beyond hope there is belief,” state Holder-Winfield’s flyers. “Our mission is to conduct our politics so that people have reason to believe again.”
That message resonated more strongly, he said, when Holder-Winfield upset the machine’s candidate in the primary race.
“I never thought you could beat the machine,” people told him after he won, Holder-Winfield said. His campaign inspired teens like Larry Stovall and Paul Hudson to get involved with politics. “You had people really inspired. There’s nothing like actually helping people to inspire them to do something.”
To see inspiration “is great” in a neighborhood like Newhallville “that needs this whole hope and inspiration thing going on,” he said.
“I feel great about my race,” he said. “I feel great about Barack’s race: I think I’ll call that, too.”
No Intention Of Leaving
Earlier in the day at the polls, Willie Greene accompanied his 87-year-old mother, at left, so she could vote at the 21st Ward polling place on Dixwell Avenue.
Greene conceded defeat soon after the polls closed. He said he believes “Gary will be a good state representative.” He advised Holder-Winfield to “build an agenda from the ground up, not the state down.”
“The district has spoken,” Greene said. “There’s nothing else to be said.”
Greene ran as an independent even though he is the co-chairman of the Democratic 21st Ward Committee. That led Party Chairman Susie Voigt to call for Greene to drop out of the race or else resign his post. He did neither.
“I have no intention of leaving” the party. “I just don’t intend to be one of the many that wants to follow Sue Voigt blindly. I’m not going to do that.”

Greene hold your head high. You have nothing to be ashamed of. I saw many city employees who worked against you some of which you have assisted in the past. You have for the last 25 plus years have worked hard and have been a voice for many in the district and this city. Unlike CEDARHILLRESIDENT I take no joy in your loss. I applaud and thank you for your contribution to this city and I sincerely hope you will continue to be active. I like your comment regarding your loss to Winfield. I am proud to know you and to have voted for you. You are a class act.

Group,
The reality has more to do with the fact that the democratic "Machine" here in New Haven has slowly become the authority on who can run, for what office, and when...within the city of New Haven. Anyone who challenges this process will be outcasted and have the "Machine" as your opponent. Ask Jackie James, George, Robert Lee, Mike Smart, and all the other Alderfolks that have once been on the side of the Machine, only to have the Machine turn against you when you do not act accordingly. The sad part is how little is given to these candidates (most become indebted for as little as a couple hundred dollars for lawn signs) who in return relinquish their voice to the Machine...I respect the above mentioned group for standing against the Machine and winning their respective races.
Willie Greene, for better or worst, has become the resident Machine anti-hero and voters dont take him as serious. Despite his qualifications, his history makes him look like he runs for every office, every time, to be a pain in the Machines arse.
As for Susie Voigt...Well lets just say that she doesnt do anything, or make any decesion without the consent and approval of the Machine...How can you be an independent democratic voice when your "supplimental" income is directly tied to your appointment as a Marshal...and who does the appointing you ask...Don Destefano.
The Machine is powerful...not because of what the public sees, but because of what takes place behind closed doors and how many elected officials benefit from such an entity. The Machine would be a good thing if there was an opposing party with just as much presence within the city. The Machine is the great white shark in the tiny fish pond of New Haven.
I dont know much about Gary...but my advice is to stay true to yourself...you won your primary without their help, and you dont need their help now to be an effective leader. Call Willie up and have a man to man sit down without the Machine's involvement...Avoid the name calling via news mediums. Willie has a wealth of knowledge that may prove beneficial to you in the future..dont loose your democratic voice through unnecessary associations...good luck

Rep Elect Holder Winfield, I like the sound of that. Rep Elect Holder Winfield will do his district proud. An intelligent, thoughtful man, we are proud that you will be serving New Haven and the country in this most historic time.
Just awesome!

Greene's loss was bittersweet. In it all he was apart of making history. The election of President Elect Obama. However there were many that wanted to vote for him but failed to do so due to the fact that the system kicked back the ballot when they voted straight across the democratic line while at the same time trying to vote for Greene. Out of much frustration they voted totally along the democratic line missing the opportunity to vote for Greene. Greene just could not overcome the democratic line. Greene is not the anti-machine hero but he is a proactive agent for human development for all people. I hope he continues to be involved. My only advice I can give him is to back away from Reggie Mayo and company. They have no love for him and take great pride in working against him as they did in this past election and many of his previous efforts over the last few years.
