Winstanley Buys Gun Factory

Expanding his domain in the Science Park district, Massachusetts developer Carter Winstanley (pictured) has bought the former Winchester gun factory, city officials announced Thursday.
The U.S. Repeating Arms Co. (USRAC) factory, at 344 Winchester Ave., has remained shuttered since it closed in 2006.
Winstanley Enterprises LLC will add the property to its growing collection along the Winchester Avenue corridor. Winstanley also owns 300 George and an office building at 25 Science Park. He’s also tearing down a factory relic at 276 Winchester Ave to make way for a $30 million, 1,186-space parking garage.
“We are very excited that Winstanley Enterprises has made another key investment in New Haven,” said Mayor John DeStefano in a press release Thursday afternoon. “We are confident that like 300 George and 25 Science Park, Winstanley will take this vacant building and turn it into a great resource of jobs and innovation.”
The purchase comes amid a building boom along Winchester Avenue, where Forest City Enterprises has plans to turn another abandoned Winchester building into a residential complex.
“New Haven is a great place to do business,” said Winstanley in the city’s press release. (He could not be immediately reached for comment.)
Plans for the site are still being developed, according to the city.

It's great to see New Haven bucking the negative economic trends and expanding - especially in the not so obvious target areas. The optimist in me sees great opportunity in building(rebuilding) a sattelite neighborhood to bring some prosperity, via business, to areas that have not been popular for quite some time.
No if we can olny keep from destroying ourselves via an overly burdensome taxing process....

Whoa! This is a straight-up surprise to those of us active in the 'hood! I am cautiously optimistic about this and hope that it turns out to be a good thing!
25 Science Park seems to be a positive addition to the neighborhood. But there is still agitation and tension among residents about the 1000 space parking garage that is being built to accommodate 25 science park employees and others.
Can't wait to learn about the developer's plans for this new acquisition.

As a neighbor my observation has been that when they say they're going to do something they do it, and at least as well as they said they would. That's definitely a good thing for this neighborhood, which has seen many false starts through the years. I'm curious to see what they want to do with the "new" factory.
