Paula Perreault sent in the following report and these photos:
On Thursday, February 5, 2009, the Final Four Book Bowl Competition took place at Hillhouse High School. The final four teams were Conte West Hills, Troop Magnet, Worthington Hooker, and Lincoln Bassett. These teams were determined a few weeks prior at the city-wide competition between all the K-8 schools in New Haven. Students had to read ten books and study everything from the characteristics of the characters, to quotations from the books. Two teams were eliminated in the first round of questions, and two teams moved on to the final round. Lincoln Bassett was team “A”, and Worthington Hooker was team “B”. There were a total of twenty questions.
The winner of the trophy, and the title of “Book Bowl Champions for 2009” with a PERFECT score, went to Lincoln Bassett School! There were a lot of cheers and tears, because not only did these children work very hard with their coaches, but this was the first time in Lincoln Bassett history that they brought home the trophy and the title! The students on the team were: T’Rome Telford, captain; DeMarte Dailey, co-captain; Nichelle Hobby, Latamara Moye, and Corrilisha Telford. There were two alternates that also made the team and they were Soukeyna M’baye, and Zazheen Perry. The coaches of the team were Ms. Paula Perreault, Gr. 6 teacher, and Mrs. Louise Nelson, Library Media Specialist. The coaches were so very proud of their team, but also kept telling their team to stay calm, take a deep breath before answering, and most importantly to work together as a team and they would bring home the gold! Ms. Perreault and Mrs. Nelson telephoned Mrs. Gatison, the principal, immediately to tell her the good news. When the students arrived at school, the entire school was cheering and the drummers were drumming throughout the hallways as the students paraded proudly with their trophies. Way to go Lincoln Bassett!

Great job!
My daughter took part in the book bowl for a few years, and there is a lot of work involved. I wish our city had more stories like this one.
