Double-Shooting Probed

One teen was arrested, and two others wounded, in a shooting outside the Country Market in Newhallville Sunday afternoon.

The shooting took place at 4:30 p.m. at Shelton Avenue and Munson Street, police said. Police believe a teenager on the sidewalk opened fire at a group of people outside the store. Two 17-year-old boys were shot in their lower extremities. They suffered non-life threatening wounds.

The victims were uncooperative in identifying the shooter, said Assistant Police Chief Peter Reichard. A witness was more forthcoming: The witness reported seeing a teenage boy fire a gun, he said. Police tracked down a suspect matching the witness’s description. The suspect, 17, was charged with discharging a firearm; so far he has not been charged with assaulting the two victims.

Police are investigating whether the incident may be related to a fatal shooting Friday afternoon about eight blocks away.

Maurice Nicholson, age 17, was shot several times after he stepped out of Ashe’s Barber Shop at Shelton Avenue and Bassett Street at 3:24 p.m. Friday, Reichard said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. He was the fifth homicide victim this year and the fourth this month.

Police have not identified a suspect in the killing, Reichard said.

Home Invasion

In other news, a man forced his way at gunpoint into an apartment building at 81 Ellsworth Ave. Saturday night around 9 p.m., Reichard said. The building sits at the intersection of Ellsworth and Chapel Street. The assailant was looking for money. He fled without taking anything, according to Reichard.

Kitchen Fire Doused

A small kitchen fire brought a flood of firefighters to downtown Crown Street at 12:30 a.m. Sunday. The flames erupted in an oven at the bar/restaurant called 116 Crown St., according to fire officials. A fire alarm went off, summoning at least four safety vehicles to the scene. Kitchen staff quickly put out the flames with a fire extinguisher before firefighters got there, said Assistant Fire Chief Ralph Black.
