DSCN2553.JPGA once-in-28-years occurrence is on the horizon, and 100 people filled a room at the Study at Yale Sunday night to hear all about. Rabbi Chaim Shmuel Friedman brought an animated presentation to town explaining “Birca Hachama” — the one day every 28 years that Jews offer a special blessing to the sun because of an alignment of the sun, moon, and other heavenly bodies. (Click here for another video explanation.) The event was organized by the Yeshiva of New Haven; Avi Hack sent in the following photos and captions from the evening, which drew people from a cross-section of area Jewish institutions. The Yeshiva is organizing a sunrise prayer expedition to the top of East Rock on the actual date, April 8. (Call 606-4286 for details.)

Thats nothing...leading up to this event, on April 1st, theres a pre-alignment phenomenon which will decrease the earth's gravity by almost 1/3. If you've never dunked a basketball, this is your day to try it! Call your friends and family to watch...they'll be shocked.

Just to clarify: we don't actually bless the sun, we bless God for the sun at this specific time. Jews don't worship anything other than the creator himself!
