Smart Streets Are Here

holly%20pointing.JPGYale University, in collaboration with the City’s Department of Transportation, Traffic and Parking, just activated its Smart Streets website. It’s interactive — very interactive. Log on and click on the icon for Pedestrian, Motorist or Cyclist (a “hybrid life form” combining aspects of the first two kinds of road users, according to the irreverent language of the site). Holly Parker (pictured), director of sustainable transportation systems for the university, previewed the site at a meeting on campus on April 2 about complete streets. The site includes quizzes viewers can take to learn about the rules of the road and consequences for flouting them.

Awesome, I am a "citizen of the street"! Snazzy website. I love the boozy student stumbling around the sidewalk.

WOW now that we're done with the web site, can we get back to the matter of striping the roads.

Put all the desired cross walks out there.

Most people in this city, don't look at website to cross the road.

Agree. We really need to be better about painting crosswalks. Also, the bar style/zebra style should be used. It has been shown to be much safer and more effective than the typical type where you paint a couple of lines. Because it promotes better visibility. Ultimately, raised crosswalks should be used in all pedestrian rich areas.

Nice website.

Lets make the streets safer with paint and structural improvements though. The message that the city and Yale cares about the safety of their citizens is better relayed through that which the city and Yale can do best: physical improvements.

The pedestrian road signs were a great first step and a very effective marketing vehicle for safe streets...keep it up!
