Lincoln Bassett School in New Haven welcomed a delegation of 40 principals in Training from Taoyuan County, Taiwan, on April 2, 2009. Conducting a two-week, five-state tour of the U.S. educational system, plans included stops in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. Taiwan has spent the last six years laying the foundation for their children’s future by investing 100 billion NT (approx. $35 billion U.S.) in education.

The Taiwanese delegation observed the Comer Model being implemented at Lincoln Bassett School. The Comer Model, a school development program, promotes the collaboration of parents, educators, and community to improve social, emotional, and academic outcomes for children that, in turn, helps them achieve greater school success. Dr. Faye Brown, serving as the Director of Child and Adolescent Development for the School Development Program, spoke to the group and gave an in-depth presentation of how the model is applied in the educational setting. This team approach to education helped to develop positive working relationships between Lincoln Bassett, Yale University, and the Yale Nurse’s Association, among others. This concept has also improved the educational environment in more than 500 schools throughout America.

Principal Ramona Gatison led the future principals on a tour of the school’s classrooms to observe the model in progress. The Taiwanese educators observed cross-cultural work permeating lesson plans along with the READ 180 lab which focuses on reading intervention in small group instruction. Extremely impressed to see students’ work, art, and accomplishments decorating the halls, the visitors were also treated to music selections from the Lincoln Bassett Band.

Faye Brown still touting the comer model around New Haven....and she does it very well...good gig IMHO. The problem, though is despite her lovely PD's that many of us have been fortunate to attend, it is not really a model that is followed through on in most schools. I totally believe in the Comer Model, don't get me wrong, but when it comes right down to it, unless the administration is behind believing in it and putting it into practice, it is another waste of money. I'd really love to know what Dr. Faye gets to present, I know that's not very nice but every time i've seen her it's the same presentation. She's got it perfected. Great Gig or did i say that already.

If the district is really serious about the Comer Model, then every year there should be trainings to review and fine tune what a Comer's School should look like. And sorry Faye, many trained teachers could do that training and the city could save some money for more important things, technology in particular to get us up to 21st century learning.

JMHO!

It's refreshing to know that amidst all the trends in education the SDP has not deviated from the ideals and core concepts they have espoused over the years. While the rest of the country engages in a frenzied attempt to raise test scored, Dr. Comer reminds us that at the heart of teaching, we are really raising kids. I have always believed that if we attend to a child's social and emotional well-being greater academic achievement will flourish, as well. I am grateful for the Comer training I received so many years ago that still resonates in my classroom each and every day. Dr. Brown you are truly an inspirational speaker....stay the course!

Teachergal - Sorry honey, but you need to work on your ethical pathway!
