Youth Program Readies For A Third Summer

After two successful summers keeping kids out of trouble, Javaughn “J.J.” Harris (pictured) is gearing up for a third rendition of his Newhallville youth program.
Harris and neighbor and then-fellow high-schooler, Caprice Taylor, formed the Thompson Street Youth Coalition in 2007.
Harris is looking for help to make a third summer possible. He reckons he needs $2,418 to make it happen: Click here to read the program’s budget.
Read below for Harris’s writeup of the summer ahead:
Picture it. Is a five week summer program that will benefit 10 to 12 teens in the Newhallville area of New Haven. This program was designed by Javaughn Harris a New haven youth who has created and ran two successful summer programs in the past that has served over thirty youth. The reason for this program is Javaughn is interested in the field of photography and design, so he decided why not teach what he knows to the younger youth that are also interested in this field. The program will be broken into two half during which the participants, will get to know digital cameras and creating photo stories about the community and environment. We will teach participants to incorporate written text, audio narration, music, sound effects, and various visual effects. We will also teach the participants how to do story boarding. The participants will then present their projects in a public forum for the community to see what they have been working on and how we all have very different lifestyles. The second half, participant teams will create two video pieces. The first will be a public service Announcement about one issue that is plaguing the community that we all live in. The second video will be a short film focusing on whatever topic the students choose to do.
Here’s the contact info if you’d like to donate, send checks to Thompson Street Youth Coalition, 73-75 Thompson St. New Haven, CT 06511; checks should be made out to “Solar Youth” with Thompson St. Youth Coalition in the memo area. For more info call 203-285-0752.

WOW this is brilliant, kids working to try and get something done. You have got to love the energy. It's unfortunate people are too busy focused on all the problems youth are creating instead of engaging the postive efforts being made. There are tons of comments on the recent shooting article. I wonder if anyone will take the time to view this one. It's time for change, lets focus on solutions!
There is a Mayors art grant that may provide funding for this program and you can expect a check from me as well.

Only one week away from TSYC summer sessions and the budget is still short.
We know times are tough but even $1 will aid the program.
Please visit http://www.tsyc.org/donate to help keep the kids off the streets and safe this summer.
