Mayor Sticks By Paca

Mayor John DeStefano is standing by an aldermanic candidate who has been catching heat for failing to pay $20,000 in child support for his kids in two different states.
Marcus Paca (pictured), who’s 31, is running in Edgewood against veteran Ward 24 Alderwoman Liz McCormack in a Democratic primary. Click here for a story detailing his legal woes and extensive reader debate. DeStefano’s administration and the Democratic machine have supported Paca from the outset; McCormack is not considered a reliable vote for City Hall.
“I support him,” said DeStefano Wednesday.
“Has he made some mistakes? Yes,” said the mayor. But he said Paca has been honest in owning up to what he did.
“I don’t think he should be crossed off the list for this offense.”
“The issue is whether it’s a deterrent to voters,” he said.
The mayor was asked about allegations that his Democratic team didn’t adequately vet the candidate before publicly supporting him.
“Marcus wasn’t recruited to run,” responded DeStefano. “Marcus decided to run.”
He said he believes Paca is a better alternative to McCormack because he has “energy” and because on the campaign trail he is showing a commitment to working with people in the ward. The campaign will be won or lost based on those face-to-face interactions, he said.
“Voters will make the decision in the end.”

City of New Haven and JD have lost there Moral standing, SICK.

No need to bash the mayor over his decision to support a candidate. We've all made mistakes in our lives, none of us can sit on a moral high ground.
I'm not defending Paca, but I don't agree with making moral judgements in general.
If you want to get fired up about something, get upset about the Marshall who donates money to Democrats, makes 234k a year in Marshall fees, and just told the Press he is planning to BID RIG to get more $$$ from contracts next year. ...
It really annoys me that my fellow citizens spend so much time stewing over things like aldermen (2k a year, 1 out of 30 votes, not the end of the world) when there are serious things going on.
how many comments on the New Haven Advocate story exposing the illegal behavior of the city over the Gateway Terminal? How many comments on the Marshal who is telling reporters he's going to ...take more $$$ from tax payers?
Meanwhile Aldermen manage to draw hundreds of angry irate comments about morality issues & conspiracy theories.
Trust me, City Hall doesn't need any conspiracy, the people of New Haven are blind enough to ignore things like Gateway Terminal & Criscuolo.

Urge UI to lower cut rate hike so we can ask the New Haven taxpayers to re-direct there hard earned money and give to the "Hungry Children from Fathers who don't pay Child Support" (HCFCS).

You forgot to add city hall appoints convicted, unrepentant felons to the board of fire commissioners.

Hey,
I understand the policy of censoring, but I'd rather my comment was not printed at all if the basic idea is removed: Criscuolo wanting to make more $$$ is something I fully understand. However, his reported method--from a quote he said to a reporter for this paper--is something that I have a problem with.
I'd also disagree that my use of the term "bid-rig" to describe Criscuolo's own words is something that needs to be censored.
While he may not be intending to rig bids, the quote he gave this paper quite clearly falls under that lablel:
http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/public/guidelines/primer-ncu.htm
Here is a link to the US Department of Justice site. You can read here a comprehensive explanation of the term bid-rigging & price-fixing, and make the judgement for yourself.
Again, I understand & applaud the NHI's decision to try to be more friendly/less angry, but at the same time, I don't think this was a good choice. I'm referring to something that this paper covered, which even a very minor amount of research (googling "bid rigging") can bring up very quickly.
Any time that there is an agreement amongst contractors to provide a financial benefit to the contrators, it is legally considered bid-rigging. Apologies if that offended anyone, but the quote in answer to "What are you going to do" was "Negotiate with the low bidders". That's pretty black & white.

What tha...?
"...some mistakes"??
Did our Mayor really say that Paca made "some mistakes?"
Wow. I am honestly shocked. IF these accusations are true, this guy has NO business serving the public. True, his crime, lack of responsibility and moral failures do not legally take him out of the race, BUT why is Destefano and the Democratic party advocating him.
How many times have we heard public officials on both sides condemn men who fail to pay child support as scum of the earth. Laws are in effect to harshly prosecute men who have committed the crimes that Paca has committed.
I am not a Republican, but I would much rather have a responsible Republican in office that a Democrat who neglects to take care of his own children.
I am surprised by and very disappointed in Destefano and the and the local Democratic party. I think this says more about them than it does about Paca.
Destefano is right... IT IS UP TO US, THE VOTERS, TO DECIDE WHAT WE WILL TOLERATE.

And this surprises you why? Wasn't DeStefano the same guy that said "just pay your bills" when people were being foreclosed on due to back taxes and water/sewer bill issues. I guess having the money in the city coffers is more important than someone putting a roof over their children's heads and food on their table. Stand up people.

Marcus Paca you have already Sold Us Out.

We are living in the age of "electability is everything" the rest be damned. Seems to me that this must say something about the mans character.
But what does that matter, he's electable.

Paca beware of these signs. You are a stand alone candidate and don't let people associate you with JD's machine. I know you just want whats best for the community, but they are looking for you to join them. JD's machine wants to act as though they support you. There is no doubt you will take the 24th seat, they just want to reel you in now to secure your vote for Goldfield and everything else. I WARN YOU! Keep a safe distance, you are doing fine without the machine. Don't let them make you think you owe them.
