nhihanhmay19%20009.JPGAt its annual meeting Tuesday Robert Solomon was reelected chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Housing Authority of New Haven.

Also elected were Reverend Jason Turner as vice chair, Lee Cruz as the assistant treasurer, and Sheila Carmen as assistant secretary.

Solomon, clinical professor at Yale Law School (pictured on the left, with Cruz), was executive director of HANH from August 1999 to June 2002. He’s been chairman of the board since 2003.

He offered this comment after his reelection; “It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to work with the people at the Housing Authority. Over the last ten years, we have developed Monterey, Quinnipiac, and other sites, housing conditions have been improved dramatically, and we have instituted strong systems of accountability. The staff at HANH has good reason to feel proud.”

In other personnel news, Jimmy Miller was re-upped for another year as deputy director of HANH for special projects. Miller, the former director of the agency, supervises real estate deals and long-range capital planning for HANH, most recently Eastview Terrace and the evolving re-development of West Rock.

His salary is to be $126,000

After the resolution authorizing the reappointment passed, Solomon said of Miller: “He’s saving us much more money than we are paying him.”

New Haven is lucky to have Mr. Solomon on this case. You should have seen HANH before he took over. Solomon is not only a national expert but is also a great person to work with.

Mr. Solomon is a valued asset to HANH. That's why I am surprised by his support for Mr. Miller. Actually his "support" may be half-hearted, which is understandable.

I'm not sure if I agree with all of Mr Solomon's goals, but I look at the physical improvements that have happened down at Quinnipiac/Riverview and I do like what I see. He's obviously a very passionate person.
