(Updated 7 p.m.) Police have arrested a man who they say opened fire at an afternoon barbecue in the Farnam Courts projects, hitting a little girl with a stray bullet.

Police arrested the suspect in West Haven at 5 a.m. Tuesday, according to Assistant Police Chief Peter Reichard. He said the suspect turned himself over to police without incident.

The suspect, 25, of Admiral Street, allegedly fired a half-dozen shots at a cookout at the Fair Haven housing project’s courtyard on Saturday, June 13 at 12:30 p.m. About 20 to 30 people were in the courtyard at the time. Police believe he started shooting to “intimidate” or “scare” his ex-girlfriend, Reichard said. The suspect didn’t fire at her — he fired at the ground or up in the air.

One of the bullets ricocheted off a metal utility box and hit an 8-year-old girl in the buttocks. Witnesses helped police identify the suspect through statements and photo identification, Reichard said.

The man was charged with third-degree assault with a firearm, risk of injury, reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and carrying a pistol without a permit.
He was held on a $750,000 bond.

Shooting Probed

In other news, police are investigating a daylight shooting in the Newhallville neighborhood Tuesday. The shooting took place at 12:54 p.m. on West Read Street, police said.

Update: The victim, a Chinese food delivery woman, was shot in the left wrist, according to Officer Joe Avery. She was transported to Yale Hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

Can the NHI follow up on what the eventual penalties/sentencing in this case is? And how many years people with these types of sentences actually serve, on average?

It would be interesting to know, especially for those of us familiar with Farnam Courts and how much suffering these types of criminals cause..
