taser%202.jpg(Updated) Lt. Thaddeus Reddish has been chosen to take over the East Rock/Newhallville policing district, as the last step in a management changeup at the police department.

Reddish, who’s 43, is a 17-year veteran of the city police force. He will take over on June 28 as the district manager of policing District 7, a diverse area spanning both East Rock and Newhallville neighborhoods, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery.

Reddish replaces Lt. Rebecca Sweeney, who’s taking over the downtown policing district.

In the past, Reddish served as the executive training instructor at the police academy, where he conducted training in firearms and whipped new recruits into shape. Reddish became a lieutenant in February. He most recently served in the patrol division as a shift commander. He was appointed head of the SWAT team in April.

Reddish a introduced himself to East Rock neighbors at a management team meeting Monday night. He said he wasn’t ordered to take over the district.

“I volunteered,” he said. The choice was “very personal,” because he and his family live in the district. “I’m kind of tired of what’s going on,” he explained. He said there is a lot of gunfire near his home.

Reddish comes to the job after serving as district manager in Westville from 1997 to 2000. At that post, he oversaw a busy district with five housing complexes and murders practically “every week,” he said. He acknowledged the unique challenges of his new terrain, which spans some of the most affluent streets in the city, then crosses the hill to Newhallville, which he said has had the majority of the city’s gun violence this year.

Neighbors in East Rock welcomed his presence: They said in the last six to eight months, only twice has a cop showed up to the management team. Reddish pledged to attend all meetings.

“I look forward to working with you,” he said.

What the heck is that thing he's holding? A tazer?
If it is, I'm not sure that is a completely fair photo for the NHI to run with this "introductory" story on him.
Maybe you should have run a photo of Lt. Reddish playing with kids at a carnival or holding a balloon, or something. I'm sure its possible he does that, too.
Now I'll always associate him with taze'ing (sp? as in: 'to tazer') people for a living.

Hey Jawbone, I dont care if he was holding a bomb! I'm glad he's coming to our district. Thad Reddish is a great guy and a great local cop.

KAMB, I'm with you. I was just kind of calling the NHI out on the photo selection skillz.

Congratulations Lieutenant Reddish on your accomplishments. The recognition of your hard work coming to fruition is long overdue. You are a leader with charismatic integrity. Over the years I've seen you grow. You are fair and caring, ready and willing to listen to people. You have admiration among your peers as a diplomat gifted with verbal acumen (you got skillz).

Sidetracking for a minute >>There is good and bad in all neighborhoods as well as organizations __ in all walks of life from the wealthiest to the poorest. Its easy to find time to complain and be critical; saying something positive takes time and thought.

This is the time for positive action and common sense. Our leaders need sound ideas from the grassroots to formulate solutions for the changes we want to see happen in our communities - that's practicing solidarity in real time. It takes balance and courage to represent law enforcement to the public and media critics. Being an activist is rarely a popular position. Who can please everyone, all the time? There will be challengers.

From Parents to Principals, Officers to Mayors: here lies a challenge: Each one teach one, Each one reach one! We can start with self. If we can't be taught, can we (at least) learn a new trick?

Back to congratulations >> Lieutenant Thaddeus Reddish: Thank you for being an example of a stand-up leader, our community needs you. It's a tough job, good luck __ Godspeed
