Lewis Park Love-In Abates

nhibutterfly%20009.JPGThe “sex slide” has a new rating: G. As in family friendly.

Lt. Luiz Casanova (at center in photo) reported Tuesday that a combination of police and neighborhood vigilance has put the kabosh for now on illict sex — among teens, and of the more professional variety — at a kid’s slide in little Lewis Park at Front and Lewis Streets in Fair Haven.

Casanova, the area’s district manager, attended a meeting at the park Tuesday with approximately ten neighbors who had been observing prostitutes as well as neighborhood teens using the new blue slide as a rendezvous for sex acts. Click here for that previous story.

“The problem’s gone away,” Casanova said afterwards.

He attributed this to increased patrolling by his officers and an invigorated engagement by the community.

Casanova also reported that officers had identified one of the teenage girls involved. “We talked to her mother,” he said, and “she’s taken ownership.”

Casanova said that if the girl returns to the park, she knows now to act in a way that’s appropriate.

Casanova said that at the request of neighbors he is going to speak with the police department’s community services officer, Joe Avery, about reigniting the area’s block watch. Neighbors also volunteered to fix broken lights near the park and to provide new lights.

Neighbors were still mixed about whether to get rid of the covered slide altogether in favor of one less tempting to trysters. “Between all of us,” Casanova said, “we can fix this problem without stripping the park.”

Who were the neighbors that were spoken with? When did this meeting occur? As a Lewis Street resident, I'd love to know, since I saw the cruiser, but wasn't made aware of any meeting, nor were other neighbors on Lewis and surrounding streets.

I think that's actually Dover Beach behind Casanova...

Hi Lewis Street,

I live at 15 Lewis Street. I am on a list with several people who live in Fair Haven and on Lewis Street. My husband, Matthew Breisch, set up the appointment with Lt. Casanova to discuss the Lewis Street Park. I believe it went very well. We invited everyone on the e-mail list and others we see when I go to the park with my son. Unfortunately, not many people showed up (about 8). We discussed several ideas including lighting, police presence, and a neighborhood watch. If you want to get the e-mails or be a part of the community watch, please e-mail me at teambreisch@yahoo.com or come by my house at 15 Lewis.

Jeanene,

I was left off. Seeing as Chris Ozyck and I coordinated the redo of the park with over 20 Lowe's employees and a plethora of community members (who signed sign-in sheets at each of the build-outs so we know exactly who they are and aren't) I'm surprised at this. Message tonight is that the slide is being switched out? On who's authority? Lee Cruz has been working with the CSNA who have over 60 people on their list that worked themselves raw, along with me, to construct this park. There is an "I" in community, but decisions such as this are best left to the "we" not the "2" that live on a street which boasts 4 empty houses at the moment out of 10 (although one is undergoing active construction). Your neighbors have stood by you in the thick of your building issues. Your neighbors are not just the folks to your left and your right. Some of your neighbors constructed a terrific place for ALL to enjoy. Unfortunately, we don't live in Michigan, and neither do you. This is an active neighborhood that believes in inclusiveness, not exclusiveness.

Jeanene,
In the emails that were sent out by your husband he explicitly stated that the meeting with Lt. Cassanova was by invite only, and I quote:

"We would like to limit this meeting to the residents that live on Lewis St, or directly abut the property, but we would love to hear any input from the surrounding area. If you live on Lewis St, or live on property abutting the park, please email or call me for the time and place of the meeting. Everyone else is encouraged to voice (or write) your opinions to have them represented at the meeting."

I don't understand how you can state your disappointment at the number of people showing up at the meeting when that's exactly how you set it up! You live on a street with very few houses that are inhabited!

I stated my viewpoint in both conversation and email regarding the park, especially in NOT replacing the slide. Was I represented?
