Object Lesson #21

Alexander Hunenko, “Skowhegan,” cast bronze
9 Cleveland Rd. (at the intersection of Central Avenue)
Speaking of monuments on the lawn, here, embraced by roses, is a reminder that artists are also neighbors. This is not always a secret. There is a scattering throughout the city of art made public on private land. This sculpture by Alexander Hunenko is one of the most notable, matched by another of his works on the opposite side of the house. A revisioning of 18th century garden ornament, these are sculptures as guests; suggestive, but innocent. They are like some riled creatures who have forsaken their natural habitat for domestic life, relieved to let their wild hearts be at ease.
