Mr. Bass makes some good points but Mom doesn't believe in the De Facto democratic primary process. My grandad used to tell her you can't find city hall but all around I see people who ask her how to get things done. She worked for an NPR station in Boston back in the late 1980s. She came back to New Haven from Beantown in 1992 and she's a very hard working dedicated activist.
It's also a shame that NPR didn't comment on the fact that many people know to go to the New Haven Independent Website because a lot of information never get's into the Register.
Thanks Mr. Bass and your team of reporters for your work. I know that knowledge is important.\\

I think you did a decent job Paul. However, I still feel that you do not understand what the testing process contained--it was a written test weighted at 60% which measured learned information. It was multiple guess--so even if you did not know the answer, you still had a chance to get it correct. The second portion was not an Oral Interview--it was an Oral Assessment, which is much different than a simple interview. The O.A. tests the applicants ability to exercise the knowledge in real life situations. There is no personal information given about the applicant--so it is not like a typical business interview.
The test is not overly complicated, however, it is meant to prove that you understand what your role as a "Leader" in the Fire Service actually is. If written test can evaluate Medical Doctors, Accountants, Lawyers, Nurses, Paramedics, etc.--shouldn't we as citizens and tax payers require the same standard from our Fire Dept.'s Lieutenants, Captains, Battalion Chiefs, Deputy Chiefs and Operational Chief?---Or would you rather create a lower standard for these life saving positions just to appease a splinter group of minorities who apparently have no faith in their own ability to perform. High school must have been racially biased towards them too.
