Bolt Bus Encouraged To Stop Here

TM_090809_006.jpgWearing Bolt Bus red, Dixwell Alderman Greg Morehead secured unanimous approval for a resolution encouraging the discount Bolt Bus company to add a stop in New Haven.

He was cheered on by four similarly clad supporters who came out to show their approval of the plan as the Board of Aldermen approved the resolution Monday night.

Bolt Bus offers cheap bus fares between several Eastern cities, including Washington D.C, Boston, and New York. Fares range from $1 to $25. Last month, an online campaign to encourage the company to stop in New Haven was launched on the website SeeClickFix.

Riding the wave of enthusiasm, Morehead (pictured) drafted legislation to invite the company to add New Haven to its list of destinations. The non-binding resolution is the first bill that the alderman has authored.

The resolution shows the Bolt Bus company that the city is interested in hosting a stop, Morehead said. He said that he hopes that the company will respond favorably to the overture.

Morehead has made his work on the Bolt Bus issue into a key element of his campaign for reelection, mentioning it to Yale voters during dorm-to-dorm canvassing.

Bolt Bus would provide an affordable way for city residents to travel around the Northeast, Morehead said before the meeting. Addressing fellow aldermen, Morehead touted the bus line’s leather seats, ample leg room, and free wi-fi. He also mentioned the environmental benefits of increased bus use. The buses already travel through New Haven on their way between Boston and New York, he said.

The Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to approve the Bolt Bus resolution.

TM_090809_024.jpgRed-shirted supporters gathered in the hallway after the vote for a photo. Doug Hausladen (second from right in photo), who had proposed the red-shirt convergence on SeeClickFix said that he was pleased that Bolt Bus had found the unanimous support of the board.

Morehead said that a location for a potential Bolt Bus stop had not yet been selected. He suggested that Long Wharf would be a convenient spot.

Has anyone even bothered to ask the people at Bolt Bus if adding New Haven as a stop is feasible for them? Since Morehead does seems more interested in getting reelected than doing productive work maybe someone at the NHI should ask for a response from the company in a future or updated article?

Edward H,

Doesn't "productive work" GET you reelected? Or are you saying that working to get the City to buy the Q house out of bankruptcy (which morehead did) isn't productive work?

I agree that it would be good to ask Bolt Bus what they think, but it seems that it should be on their radar--New Haven has plenty of people who would like to go to NYC or Boston to visit friends and family fairly regularly, and we're right on I-95, which I understand to be the route that Bolt Bus takes up to Boston.

Hey Edward,
I have talked to them and they are not adding lines till '10. The hope is New Haven would be one of those lines.

Considering the out of date building is going to need millions of dollars of repairs, no. But that of course is a matter of opinion.

It seems very silly to me as a business owner myself for a politician to go running around creating useless legislation inviting a business to come to New Haven without contacting said business first. This appears to be more about political grandstanding than making a genuine effort to bring a business to New Haven. Contact the business first find out if there are any legal, economic or business reasons for them NOT to come to New Haven then craft legislation to help overcome those obstacles if possible.

Can you read, Edward_H? Where does it say anything about legislation? It was a resolution, nothing more, nothing less, and probably didn't take up that much of the BOA's time. But what that resolution will do is show Bolt Bus that the city supports a stop in New Haven, and will work with them to make it happen. If you don't think that will work in New Haven's favor when Bolt is deciding where to put new stops, then you really don't know what "productive work" means.

From the article above:

From the previous article on the subject:

Morehead told students he's "authoring legislation to put a Bolt bus stop in New Haven,"

Since you failed to read the articles yourself I doubt you have the ability to debate what "productive work" is.

Note that the baggage policy seems to disallow transportation of bicycles; that being the case, it is immaterial to me whether the company comes to this city.

Bolt Bus did see the picture of 5 citizens wearing red showing up at the Board of Alderman hearing on Tuesday. See the image here on the SeeClickFix issue:

Here's Bolt Bus' tweet:

"@dwscmt You're welcome! We love the picture of you guys spelling out Bolt! Red shirts and all! :)"

Don't rely on BoltBus if you ever need to work. Their internet and electrical outlets are unreliable. The only reason I'd ever chose them is because they have both internet and electrical outlets, while other companies don't. But in my extensive experience, their amenities work less than half of the time. When they don't work, their drivers are unapologetic and their customer service representatives are confrontational. I'll never spend a dollar of my travel money again on this company, which is just a subsidiary of Greyhound, so I'm not sure why I'm always surprised when stuff does not work.
