Cops thought they might catch a burglar. They ended up picking up an alleged drug dealer and his cocaine, cash, and assault rifles.

The action took place early Thursday morning in Westville.

Here’s what happened, according to Police Spokesman Officer Joe Avery:

Police responded to a burglary alarm at 2:20 a.m. 36 Cleveland Road. When they found the front door a few inches open at the house, they entered to perform a “protective sweep” to check for intruders or injured residents. During the sweep, officers came across narcotics, drug paraphernalia, money, and guns in plain view.

Obtaining a search warrant later that afternoon, police seized about 200 grams of cocaine, $3,748 in U.S. currency, and 13 guns, including two illegal assault weapons. A 46-year-old resident of the house was arrested and charged with five crimes, including intent to sell narcotics within 1500 feet of a school.

Mugged For Five Bucks And A Gas Can

In other crime news, five people robbed and assaulted a pedestrian on Thursday night. They got away with $5 and a red gas can.

Here’s what happened, according to Police Spokesman Officer Joe Avery:

At 8:50 p.m. on Thursday night, five people mugged an individual near the corner of Chapel and College Streets. The victim suffered minor injuries to her mouth and right arm. The police caught one of the alleged assailants, a 14-year-old girl. She was charged with seven crimes, including robbery, assault, and strangulation.

Earlier, at 6 p.m., a man in a black hoodie tried to rob an individual near the corner of Dixwell Avenue and Henry Street. The alleged mugger, who had a black handgun, fled and was not apprehended.
