Remains Of Annie Le Believed Found;
“A Time For Compassion,” Levin Says

(Updated: 10:35 p.m.) Police found what they believe is the body of missing Yale med student Annie Le on the day she was to be married, ending a five-day manhunt that transfixed the nation.
New Haven police made the announcement at a press conference at 1 Union Ave. at 9 p.m. Sunday.
State police found human remains shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday inside a wall in the basement of 10 Amistad St., the Yale medical building where Le was last seen, according to Assistant Police Chief Pete Reichard and Yale President Richard Levin. Police have not yet identified the body, but they believe it is Annie Le (pictured).
“We are assuming that it’s her,” Reichard said. (Click on the play arrow to watch part of his statement.)
Police have ruled her case a homicide.
Le, a 24 year-old third-year Yale pharmacology graduate student, went missing on Tuesday. Video cameras captured her entering 10 Amistad St., but she was never seen coming out. More than 100 law enforcement agents descended on the city to try to solve the mystery. They watched hours of video surveillance tape taken from over 70 cameras. They combed through the 120,000-square-foot building day and night.
Sunday, they finally made a breakthrough in the case.
Shortly after 5 p.m., they found the remains of a female human body secreted inside a wall in the building.
The body was found in the basement, said Yale President Levin in an email to the Yale community Sunday night. Levin said Yale is not jumping to conclusions about the body’s identity yet.
“Our hearts go out to Annie Le’s family, fiancé and friends, who must suffer the additional ordeal of waiting for the body to be identified,” Levin wrote. He said he has spoken to Le’s family and her fiancé, Columbia grad student Jonathan Widawsky, and “conveyed to them the deeply felt support of the Yale community.”
Levin spoke to the national press corps at about 9:45 p.m. on the steps outside his office at Yale’s Beinecke Plaza.
“Unfortunately, now is not the time for questions … Now is instead a time for compassion, for condolences, for coming together as a community,” he said in a one and a half-minute speech. (Click on the play arrow at the top of the story to watch.) He said the reason he wouldn’t take questions is to let the investigation continue full speed ahead. The Amistad Building where the body was found remains an active crime scene.
Now that the case has been classified a homicide, it has been transferred to the jurisdiction of the New Haven police. Reichard presided at the police headquarters press conference in the absence of Chief James Lewis, who has been in Wisconsin for the weekend but has kept up with developments by the half hour. Officials from the FBI and state police also appeared at the press conference.
New Haven police will work alongside the FBI, state’s attorney and state police to crack the case. They did not release further details Sunday, citing a pending investigation. The state medical examiner will identify the body and perform an autopsy.
From the start, the case has been a mystery with an ominous air.
Did she drop out of sight to avoid her upcoming wedding, which was planned for Sunday?
At first that was a working theory. It dissolved as the week went by — as her fiancé, friends, and family reported her excitement about the wedding; as security camera tapes revealed no trace of Le leaving the building she had entered at 10 a.m. Tuesday; as bloody clothing was found in a ceiling at the building at 10 Amistad St.
FBI and Yale officials still said at a Saturday press conference that they weren’t sure yet whether they had a missing persons case or a grisly crime on their hands. But all signs were pointing to the latter.
By Sunday, the search for clues led to an incinerator in Hartford. That was a routine search, Reichard said.
Le herself was apprehensive about crime in New Haven. She wrote an article this past February for a medical campus magazine in which she interviewed Yale Police Chief Jim Perrotti about ways students could keep safe and avoid becoming another “unnamed victim.”
A victim she became, but not unnamed.

What happened to the professor who mysteriously cancelled class that day?

I am so sad! A wonderful young life is ended in such a terrible way.
My guess is this crime must have been committed by someone she knows. One big clue regarding the timeline is the fire alarm. The murderer may have attempted to clear people out of the building so he could then manage to hide the body without being seen.

THIS IS SO SAD. They better search this building now and see how many other bodies are behind the walls.
The fiance -- I cannot imagine the pain he is going through. He spent years dating this woman. He had his perfect dream bride. I feel so sorry for him.
This is so evil I can hardly believe it.

Whoever did this deserves the death penalty. B-stard.

Very sad for her fiance and family. This should have been the happiest day of their lives--- instead some depraved person ruined it.

The question is was this a random crime of opportunity, or planned? The fact that she was stashed away in the basement would appear to indicate premeditation by someone with knowledge of the building -- someone she knew or who was stalking her. Also, this perp knew to hide clothing in ceiling tiles. I hope they catch this criminal because it's hard to feel safe having someone like that in the community. My prayers go to her family, fiance, and friends. And may Annie rest in peace. . . this is a horrible tragedy and the worst of all nightmares . . .

This is just sad. I think all of us were hoping she just had cold feet and was somewhere figuring things out. I am so very sorry for her friends family and her husband to be. My prayers are with you all. This is just very sad.

Why wasn't the basement search earlier then today. would the basement and the tunnels underground around Yale be some of the first place start to look in. With 100 people invold in the search no one in the past few days checked the basement with a dog?

I think it's a love crime; not a random act. The murderer is someone she knew and who works there. No stranger can get into the building, especially a secured building, and kill a person. Inside job. Jealous rage possibly.
Or, some psycho who works there. And it looks like it happened during the day. may be that fire alarm was a decoy or she didn't leave the building and was alone. Very sad story. Unnecessary loss of life.

A few questions/comments-
Fire alarm incident confusion-It was stated (initially by the university and/or FBI) that it was set off by an individual opening a steam pipe. Do they know the individual that set off the alarm or could it have been the suspect?
Does anyone know if this building is connected to the underground tunnel system throughout Yale & New Haven?
I always thought that better surveillance was the key to crime reduction. This incident is going to cause New Haven (and definitely Yale) to increase public surveillance. New Haven currently has neighborhood surveillance in certain areas and it would probably be a good thing to increase. But, for this to happen (in a building with good security), maybe surveillance (at least a visible eye-in-the-sky) will not put end to crime.
Where is W when you need him and his warrant-less wire taps.

Yes, it is a sad case. Ferd-- Yale has already ruined the life and career of one instructor for no reason, let's not jump to conclusions. It seems pretty obvious this was not some random street thug.

Amazing! George W Bush has been blamed for a murder at Yale! Where the f@#k does it end?
Posted by: Moira | September 14, 2009 7:59 AM
This is heartbreaking and disturbing. I'm sure it was premeditated--probably someone very jealous that she was marrying someone else. I agree: what about the professor who cancelled class that day? And the fire alarm would no doubt be an easy way to clear the building and hide the body. Ugh. The whole thing makes me sick and sad. Her family and her fiance--yesterday was such a beautiful day to be married!--are in my thoughts and prayers.

Just woke up to the sad and tragic news, I was holding out hope that she would be found safe, just a case of pre wedding jetters. My prayers to the family and the boyfriend.
I hope the killer is found and swift justice is served.

The bloody clothing that was found may indicate a knife was used. Recall that Yale student Suzanne Jovin was stabbed about 10 years ago, a murder that remains unsolved. Let's hope this case does not go the route of that one.

Thank you, Independent, for your sensitivity in the reporting of this tragedy.
The med school area is currently a media circus and curious motorists are circling around to catch a glimpse of the site of this increasingly sensationalized story- as if it was a tourist destination. NHI readers: if you're thinking of driving by for a peek, please don't.

Very sad--my heart goes out to her family, friends, & loved ones.
Yes--excellent reporting by the NHI on this one. The questions that other reporters were asking seem rude--inappropriate. I'm glad that the NHI wasn't at the press conferences demanding speculation.
Commentators: I agree with Copeland on this one, a rare occurence I think? that we've seen a yale professor's image & reputation permanently ruined before, so let's hold back our theories. I'm sure the police are looking at far more suspects than we can imagine.

For those of you that are attempting to make this a political thing-pro Bush, against Obama (or vice-versa)...get over it and focus on what IS happening! This is a tragedy that affects ALL Americans and everything we stand for, what our ancestor's fought and died for (including my father and brother who are buried in a National cemetery).
This person had evil intent and it has nothing to do with political persuasion but of right and wrong! Can we please get back to the basics of focusing on the things with which we can agree and stop the diversion and distraction of WHATEVER agenda's are out there???
There is so much that is petty and small...but I think we can all relate to the tragedy and ramifications this atrocious event has on our families, friends, communities, campuses, society and country at large...it's bigger than US! It's about THE US!
