Lee Won’t “Waste Time” Debating

Alderman Robert Lee has refused an offer to engage his long-shot challenger in a debate about issues in Fair Haven Heights.
Maureen O’Sullivan-Best, an independent candidate in Ward 11, is challenging the Democratic incumbent alderman in a Nov. 3 vote at Bella Vista.
She reached out to Lee earlier this summer and invited him to join her in a public debate. Lee refused.
“I told her I wasn’t wasting my time with her,” said Lee in an interview last week. “She’s not worth it. What does she have to debate? She has no record. … What has she done? Nothing.”
In a letter Friday, O’Sullivan-Best asked him to reconsider.
“We owe it to our neighbors to openly discuss our visions for the Ward and what experience we have that can help make those visions a reality,” she urged.
She said the two candidates “have differing records of accomplishment and beliefs on what is best for our neighborhood,” on issues like senior services, traffic calming and public safety.
“Elections should be a time for renewed activity and discussion around neighborhood improvements and I sincerely hope that a candidate forum will help neighborhood voters make an informed decision over who should represent them on the Board of Aldermen,” she wrote.

Wow, that's pretty arrogant. Just goes to show that these incumbent Dems don't have to answer to anyone.

Ms. O'Sullivan - you should take Mr. Lee's reply to you and mail it to every voter in the ward. Let them see what he thinks about the democratic process.

This fellow is extremely arrogant. I hope the voters of the district are paying attention. Such contempt for the voters and the system should be promptly rewarded by handing him his walking papers.

Bruce do not generalize about all democratic elected representatives of New Haven based on Mr. Lee's comments. Those comments are an embarasment to democratic elected representatives such as I.

ELECTEDDEMOCRAT: I am not generalizing. You may choose not to flaunt it like Mr. Lee, but the fact remains that there is so little competition in this town that an incumbent Dem can pretty much say whatever he or she wants to without fear of consequences.

ELECTEDEMOCRAT....If you find the response by Robert Lee an embarrassment, do you intend to address Mr. Lee on his arrogant behavior?
His statement here and in the past regarding Maureen makes total mockery of the Democratic process. It would serve the residents if the 14th. ward to elect someone who really cares, and not a person with such little regard for himself and his constituents.
Mr. Lee owes Maureen, the residents of Fair Haven Heights, and the entire City of New Haven an apology. I would hate to think how this would play out if it was Maureen responding to Mr. Lee in this way!

Having been at meetings with Mr. Lee, I can assure you that his arrogance is matched only by his lack of intelligence on the issues. He contradicts himself and then bullies anyone who disagrees with the position he thinks he took.

There is a democratic process in place among the ward to put Maureen or Lee in office. The people of the ward will make that decision. There are many democrats that support Maureen. I also beleive the "machine" may even support Maureen. But ultimately its the voters of the 11th ward.

Elected Democrat -
While I agree that Lee is an embarassment, I think you are giving him a run for his money. Do you mean to tell us that you are willing to call him an embarassment, but not willing to use your name? Talk about political courage. And how is your behavior justifiable?

... This is the guy who doesn't know the difference between state and municipal sources of funding! I mean come on, he was actually quoted as telling his opponent to put away the "hatorade." Any minimally competent individual could SLAUGHTER this guy on the issues. He knows it too, otherwise he'd debate.

I do not know about the rest of the party but Lee is an embarrasment to me for his behavior with regard to the debate. However he was elected by the people. Maureen is a great advocate for our community and clearly would be perfect for alderperson. She is doing exactly what the process allows. Her to run for office because she believes Lee does not do a good job or she can do better. Once again it is the people of the 11th ward to decide who they want.
