Mom Finds Son Shot In Head

(Updated) A mother woke up Friday morning to the sound of gunshots. She discovered her son lying on the floor with a fatal wound.
Her son, who’s 27, died later this morning of a gunshot wound to the head.
That’s the story police gave Friday morning as they pieced together the city’s eighth homicide of the year.
The victim was identified as Willie Richardson by people in the community. Police declined to release his name.
The shooting took place shortly after 3 a.m. at 734 Orchard St. in the Dixwell neighborhood, police said.
Report of the shooting came from the victim’s mom, according to police Sgt. Tony Reyes, who was at the scene Friday morning.
The mom lives with her son in a first-floor apartment in a three-story home at 734 Orchard St.
She called 911 at 3:25 a.m. She said she woke up to gunshots. She emerged from her bedroom to find her son lying on the floor inside their apartment, Reyes said. Her son had a gunshot wound to the head.
Her son was taken to the hospital, where he died, police said.
As of 10:45 a.m., police were preparing to execute a search warrant on the home.
Police are confident they’ll solve the case, Reyes said. He declined to give further details.
The house at 734 Orchard is a hotbed of narcotics activity, people in the community said. Records show Richardson himself served a total of three and a half years in prison for narcotics charges.
The going theory, according to people familiar with the case, is that Richardson brought friends back to his apartment last night to hang out. Something went wrong, and he ended up dead.
Meanwhile, a few houses away from the crime scene, a woman named Michelle paid a visit to her sister’s home. Her sister is raising two kids on Orchard Street, solo, while her husband serves in Iraq. Michelle stopped by to make sure she was OK after she heard about the homicide.
“What a scene to wake up to — waking up to violence in your own home,” Michelle remarked, shaking her head.
“Your home is supposed to be safe.”
Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call police at 946-6316.

Let's see if this murder warrants the non-stop coverage that Annie Le's murder got.

You and I both know that sadly it won't.

You are right. I know. I would be interested in hearing how both the NHI and the NHPD decide on how much resources to put into a particular murder. Why does one murder get multiple stories per day and an army of law enforcement officers assigned to the case where other murders do not?

Yeah, another drug dealer getting shot in New Haven is such an interesting story. It certainly deserves a place up there with a missing bride/workplace murder saga.

I wish it would, but it seems that the victim was neither Yale, about to be married, middle class nor Asian - therefore our for-profit media won't turn any profit if they cover this.
Perhaps 1) our gov't can show they care by setting 100 agents on the case, to make sure there is a conviction, 2) our nonprofit news media can show that they care by covering it, and 3) we can show we care by asking for such things and putting our time into our communities instead of wasting our time listening to advertisements in the for-profit media.

The shooting took place at 3:00am?!
Are you people serious that you think this story is as big as the Yale murder? Lets keep it real! Anyone loss of life is sad, but it is much more of a story and somber when it involves a regualr woman, yes a Yale student soon to be married, just going to work and suddenly becoming missing for days then found murdered by an insane co-worker.
99% of the murders in NH are drug dealer shooting drug dealer, or multiple-arrest record juvenile deliquents shooting each other, yes after hours when they should be sleeping bevause they have to wake up for work or school the next day . . . that was a 'shot' at humor. . . and a pun
good night and thanks for coming.

To Edward_H,
It may or may not get the coverage, that is besides the point. With Annie Le's case you had people speaking up and helping the police with the case about anything they might have seen. These other shootings in this Town will not be as quickly to solve if the community continues to keep their mouth shut even if they have seen something go down. When police ask questions they always respond with I did not see or hear anything. So unless you get the community to stop acting like its none of their business with a "I am going to keep my mouth shut" attitude, not much will get solved. We need to stop putting the blame on others for things we are not owning up to ourselves. Speak up for things that are unfair and ruining our neighborhoods. Don't just sit there and watch injustice and tolorate it. The community needs to SPEAK UP. Don't worry what others are getting but make sure you are doing the right thing and are taking care of yourself.

WTNH sucks. I've been looking for updates and they have NOTHING. 30 words. Thanks for great coverage.

@Goodgrief: Just because he once served time for selling drugs doesn't mean that he was during his death or that he deserved what happened to him. But thanks for your indifference anyway. @Kamb: Your insensitive and sick(biased) attempt at humor was not only unecessary, but counter-productive and irrelevant at best. Does someone have to be from the Yale community or white community to be thought normal? In your mind, I'm sure they do. To you and other posters like yourself, he may be just another waste of life from the streets of New Haven, but he was his mother's baby and you and your ilk should recognize that. Everyone has a past and it's those that judge with the most indifference that usually have the most skeletons in their closets. @Che: You're right, people should speak up more about crime in their neighborhoods. But when is someone going to address the justifiable distrust between many in the community and the police. This is what fuel the "code of silence" the most. When our police stop running rampant in our streets beating people and planting drugs at their leisure people would be more inclined to help out. And speaking of the police, they have a "stop snitiching" campaign of their own that's been in practice for decades. It's revered as the Blue Wall of Silence. This code has done much more damage than any code of the streets. When that is addressed, maybe we can talk about a code amongst so-called criminals

To all the posters who just say it's just another drug dealer killed who cares, I say a mother still has to mourn the loss of her child. This persons family is mourning. Any murder no matter who it is or what the circumstances is of importance. A life was lost! That's what matters. I haven't heard anything else about this. Lets see how quickly the NHPD find a suspect. Surely it'll probably be another cold case to add to the many that NHPD already has.

To CHE: obviously you are not aware of the several crimes which have be solved in the hood as a result of "the community" providing tips to and working with the police.
Must feel real good to you-- spewing your ignorant venom from your keyboard.
